    Slavery

    Around 1600 Africans started being shipped to North America as slaves. They mostly worked on plantations ands some did the house work. Many people thought that slavery was wrong, but the majority of people thought that it was neccessary.Plantation slaves in the 1800's were called "field hands." They had to plant and pick cotton. The Underground railroad was a passage way that helped slaves escape to freedom. Abolitionists started a movement to end slavery in the 1800's.
  • MIssouri Compromise

    MIssouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 between the anti-slavery and the pro-slavery groups in the United States Congress. It prohibited the Louisiana Territory from having slavery. The MIssouri Compromise took place while James Monroe was president.
  • Escape of Harriet Tubman

    Escape of Harriet Tubman
    Harriets name at birth was Araminta Ross. She was one of many children born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland. As a child she was a nurses maid. In 1844 she married a free black man and his name was John Tubman. In 1844 Harriet wanted to run away because she was scared that her and the other slaves were going to be sold so her tand her two brothers ran away. They followed the North Star to freedom. When they reached Philedelphia she found work to save money and help others escape.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    The thirteenth amendment in the Unites States Constitution was made to abolish slavery and involuntary service. Although it is neccessary if it's punishment for a crime. It was passed on April 8, 1864 by the Senate. Then on January 31, 1865 by the house, and on December 18, 1865 Secretary of State William H. announced that it had been adopted.
  • Jackie Robinson

    Jackie Robinson
    Jack Roosevelt Robinson "Jackie" was born on January 31, 1919. He was a baseball player and he became the first African-Americna to play baseball in the major league.He played first baseman, infielder, second baseman, running back, and also shortstop. He was married to Rachel Robinson and had three kids. Jackie passed away on OCtober 24, 1972.
  • Rosa Park's bus boycott

    Rosa Park's bus boycott
    On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks, a women that is fourty-two years old and African American got on a Montgomery city bus. She sat down behind the seats that were reserved for the whites. When the bus filled up the driver asked her to move so that a white guy could sit where she was seated. After Rosa refused to move she was arrested and convicted of violationg the laws known as "Jim Crow Laws." The boycott made a huge economic threat against whites ruling th ecity of Montgomery.

    In 1957 there was a group of African americans who enrolled in Little Rock High School. After their enrollment there was the Little Rock Crisis. The Little Rock Crisis was where the students were not aloud to enter the racially seperated school by Orval Faubus. They then attened after the intervention of president Eisenhower.
  • I Have a Dream Speech

    I Have a Dream Speech
    On August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr gave the fmaous "I Had a Dream" speech. He was calling an end to racism in the United States. The speech was a big moment in the American Civil RIghts Movement. He described his dreams of freedom and equilty coming from a land of slavery and hatred.
  • Sixteenth Street Baptist Church

    Sixteenth Street Baptist Church
    The sixteenth Street Baptist Church was known as the First Colored Baptsist Church of Burmingham in 1873. It was the first church in Burmingham to allow blacks to attend. The present building was constructed in 1963 by the local black contracter T.C. Wingham.
  • Martin Luther Kings Assassination

    Martin Luther Kings Assassination
    At 6:01 p.m. on April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr was shot. He had been standing on the balcany outside his room at the Loraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee, and without warning he was shot. After the murder alot of violence began and many riots were started.
  • Emmett Till murder

    Emmett Till murder
    A 14 year old African American boy was murdered by a group of white men while visiting relatives in Mississippi. HIs murder led to many riots and protests. His death led the new generation to commit their lives to social change.
