    Escape of Harriet Tubman
    Underground RailroadWorried about getting sold, Harriet Tubman ran away from the plantation using the underground railroad to Philadelphia. There she found work and saved her money to help other slaves escape.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri Compromise MapThe Missouri Compromise got passed to declare Missouri as a free state and Maine as a slave state. This law outlawed slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36 degree latitude line, besides Missouri. The Supreme Court declared the Compromise unconstitutional three years later in the Dred Scott decision.

    The American Civil War was a four year war between the nourthern and southern states of America. The broke out in 1861 because of issues such as states rights versus federal rights, westward expansion, and slavery.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    Ratified on December 6,1865, the 13th amendment states that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

    Ratified on February 3, 1870 the 15th Amendment states that the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."

  • Emitt Till Murder

    Emitt Till Murder
    At the age of 14 Emmitt Till was kidnapped from his Chicago home and then killed. After that the murderers threw his body into the Tallahatchie River. The murderers said they did this to Emmitt because he whistled at a white woman. A photo of Emmitt’s face after being found in the river became one of the sparks of the Civil Rights Movement.

    Rosa Parks Bus Boycott
    On December 1, 1955 a 42 year old African American woman named Rosa Parks got on a Montgomery city bus. When the bus began to get crowded with white people Rosa was asked to move to the back. When Rosa refused to move, the bus driver had her arrested. After this happened local civil rights believers boycotted the Montgomery bus system.

    On February 10th, 1964 the House of Representative passed a law saying that discrimination against race, color, religion, sex, or national origin was no longer legal. These laws took the place of the Jim Crow laws that stated different races were separate but equal.
