"Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." -President Franklin D. Roosevelt (my favorite speech in history)
-
The very first carrier versus carrier battle in history. The sinking of the Lexington. The reason Carrier Division 5 was not present for Midway, in which it is very likely the Japanese could have won Midway with those two carriers.
-
One of the major contributing factors to the fall of the Japanese empire, and the end of the Pacific Theater of the Second World War. The Japanese losing the carriers: Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu, as well as the heavy cruiser Mikuma, and in return American forces only losing the Yorktown.

When the capsule returned to Earth, it was picked up by my favorite ship, USS Hornet (CVS-12). Hornet would also pick up the Apollo 12 capsule, she was planned to pick up the Apollo 13 capsule as well, until an unexpected budget cut required her immediate retirement, leaving USS Iwo Jima to pick 13 up. Hornet is preserved today as a museum ship in Alameda, California. An additional fact would be Hornet was one of the 8 carriers to sink Yamato, her bombs doing the most damage in fact.
