  • Mariam was born

    Nana told Mariam about how she gave birth to Mariam by herself on a damp, overcase, spring day in 1959. Nana also commits suicide this year.

  • Mariam goes to visit Jalil.

    Mariam was 15 years old when she left her kolba and went to go visit her dad, who would not answer the door for her. Nana commits suicide and Mariam is married off to Rasheed.

  • Mariam searches through Rasheed's room and also has her first miscarriage

    Mariam looks through Rasheeds drawers and finds a gun. Mariam also finds out she is pregneat, but then looses the baby.

    Laila's character is introduced in the Spring of 1987. They found out both her brothers died in this year.

    Laila's mom crawls back into her shell after rockets started raining down on Kabul.

  • Laila turned fourteen and Najibullah surrendered

    The communist regimes that had held power since the night Laila was born were all defeated.

  • Heavy fighting in Kabul started

    In June of 1992, there was heavy fighting in West Kabul between the Pashtun forces of the warlord Sayyaf and the Hazaras of the Wahdat faction. Pashtun militiamen began attacking Hazara househilds. Giti, Laila's friend also died this year.

  • Laila's parents are killed.

    Mid-August in 1992, Laila's house is bombed and both her parents are killed. Mariam and Rasheed take care of her.

    They settled in the southern outskirt of Kabul, firing on the city, exchanging rockets with Ahmad Shah Masosud. Early in September they captured the cities of Jalalabad and Sarobi. The Taliban were united.

    Laila realizes that Tariq has been alive this whole time and Rasheed had someone hide the fact that he was alive.

    Marium saves Laila from being choked to death by Rasheed, and kills Rasheed with the shovel.

  • Laila, Tariq, Aziza, and Zalmai leave Kabul

    Leave Kabul and go to Pakistan.

  • Aziza is sent to the orphanage

  • Laila, Tariq, Aziza, and Zamai return to Kabul

    Laila also makes a stop where Marium lived as a child. She received gifts that Jalil wanted to give Marium. Mullah gave his son these "gifts" and he gave them to Laila.

  • Drought has ended in Afghanistan

    During this year, Laila also takes over the orphanage.
