The Watergate complex is broken into
Nixon's reelection comittee tried to tape the conversations of the political opponents. During the early investagation, Nixon denied any involvement in the scandal. Then later on, Nixon refused to hand over the tapes that were secretly recorded in the Oval Office.
This scandal eneded Nixons presidency. -
OPEC places an oil embargo on the United States
This event occured during the Arab war against Isreal. United States were dependent on inports for one third of their country. Ebargo oil prices skyrocketed 400% in a single year. -
Nixon refuses to surrender secret tapes
Nixon refused to release the tapes to the prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal. He justified this action by claiming excutive privilege. -
Spiro Agnew resigns and Gerald Ford becomes the new Vice President
As the first person givento the vice-presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment (after Spiro Agnew had resigned), when he became President upon Richard Nixon's resignation on August 9, 1974, he became the only President of the United States who was never elected President nor Vice-President by the Electoral College. -
Nixon resigns and Ford is sworn in as the new President
After the scandal, Nixon knew that the House of Representatives would vote in favor of impeachment and that many Republicans would vote to convict him in a trial in the Senate. Instead of going though all those things, Nixon decided it would be a better path to follow if he resigned. -

Carter announces the Panama Canal is Panamas
The panama canal was first built to create a shortcut through Panama. President Carter signed the Panama Canal Treaty promising to give Panama control over the Canal by the year 2000. -
Carter annoumces the U.S will boycott the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games
In a protest against the war in Afghanistan, President Carter announces that the U.S will not particiapiate in the summer Olympic games in Moscow unless the Soviets leave Afghanistan. -
USSR invades Afghanistan
The Soviet Union wanted better access to the Indian Ocean for trade and their naval fleet. Control of Afghanistan would make trade with India and the Middle East easier for them. Afghanistan was also well known to have important natural resources such as: natural gas, uranium, iron ore and copper; all which the Soviets didnt mind having more of. -
Iranians take Americans Hostage
Enraged Iranian students invaded the U.S Embassy and took 66 Americans as hostages. The Khomeini goverment then decided to take control of both the embassy and the hostages to defy the U.S.
