Annie's mother and father -
Annie's dad is reading the newspaper and learns that the statue may be returned to France if money is not raised for the pedestal so it can be placed in the harbor in New York. They discuss that the torch came over to the US for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia July of 1876. It was later moved in 1877 to NYC and placed in Madison Square.

Later that day, Annie and her brother go to see the statue. They share memories of the first time of tthey had gone to the statue together. They looked through Geoffrey's spyglass at the city.
Annie had a feeling that something terrrible was going to happen. -
Annie and Geoffrey make a pact to return to the spot where the statue will stand when it is completed.
Geoffrey winked at her. -
Annie comes home with the exciting news that the statue will be coming to the U.S. as soon as enough money is collected.
Annie pledges to earn money to donate to the fund.
Her mom tells her that Geoffrey was killed in an accident in Germany.
Annie receives a box with Geofrey's beautiful spyglass .. -
Annie sells her brother's spyglass and sends a letter to Mr. Pulitzer, the publisher of the New York World newspaper, telling him she wishes to donate money to the fund in Geoffrey's memory.

The newspaper publishes Annie's letter.

The letter causes people to send donations to the fund.

Joseph Pulitzer announces that there is enough money to build the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.

Annie and her family go to the ceremony at Bedloe Island.
Joseph Pulitzer calls Annie from the crowd and returns her spyglass to her. -
Annie and her parents go take the ferry to the statue, but her parents encouraged her to go up to the torch by herself.

Annie looks out over the city and describes the view to Geoffrey.
When she was on her way home she looks at the torch as it was lit and believes that it winked at her from across the waters of the harbor.
