When Janie is 16, the pear tree is what she admires most. Soon after she kisses Johnny Taylor her Nanny tells her she has to marry Logan Killicks(way older then Janie).

Janie leaves Logan Killicks and runs off with Joe Starks. They get married. Joe provides a nice white house for them, makes a store and, tries to improve the town.

Janie soon realizes that Joe isn't who she thought he was. He is mean, bossy, very sexist, and wants her to stay in a womens place. To him a womens place is not talking, unless spoken to, no fun, and being obedient. Janie must now wear a head scarf because of an incident, and from now on she is not happy.

Joe gets ill, and Janie tries to tell Joe how she is before he dies. After he dies Janie feels somewhat free.

Janie meets Tea Cake and Everything changes from there. Eatonville doesn't agree with their relationship so they run off and get married. Janie loves Tea Cake, and Tea Cake loves her back. He shows her how to live life.

Janie returns to Eatonville, because her Husband Tea Cake dies and the Everglades doesn't make her happy without him. So she starts telling her friend Phoeby the story of everthing that happened.

When Janie and Tea Cake are spending time in the Everglades(the muck) a storm comes. Janie and Tea Cake are sheltered inside. Water caves into their home, and Janie is looking for Tea Cake through the water. A dog with bites Tea Cake, and Tea Cake gets ill, and later dies.
