Sara was born from former slaves Owen and Minerva Breedlove in Delta louisiana.

At the age of seven Sara's parents died of yellow fever which left her orphaned. To escape being caught in the yellow fever out break she and her older sister which ended up raising her moved to Vicksburg.

At the age of 14 she married Mosses McWilliams. It has been said that she did this to get away from the abuise of her sisters husband.She moved to St. louis with him.

She had her only child, her daughter A'lelia. ( She was still with mosses at this time.)

Because of her struggles with scalp aliment, which caused her great hair loss, she begain experimenting with hair care products and testing out different treatments .

She moved to denver and worked as a hair care sales rep for Annie Malone. Malone was an established afican american entrepnuer. Also during this year she invented a methosd of straightening african american type "kinky" hair which would become very popular. This meathod included using her home made pomade, lots of brushing, and the use of a heated comb. It is a misconception that Sara invented the heated comb she DID NOT however, she DID make it very popular throughout the black commmunity.

married a newspaper worker named Charles joseph Walker. Later on he helps sara advertise her products in news papers. And he is also reponsible for giving Sara her very famous nick name Madam C.J. Walker.

Sara and her current husband charles traveld across the country, especially to the heavily african american populated communites promoting her products. She also gave lectures and demonstration on how to use the products as well as showing her straightening method made with her pomade, a brush, and a heated comb.

Sara opened Lelia College which served as a training place for her employees, and a factory for products. She had her daughter Lelia manage it.

After moving to indianapolis, she established Madam C.J. walker Laboritories. Which is also where she manufactured her products and trained her sales beauticians.

Sara moved to New York where she set up an office so she could continue to over see her buisness and while in new york she became involved in the harlem social and political life. She took special interest in the NAACP's anti-lynching movement and contributed $5000
