    Henry Laurens was born
    Henry Laurens served as president of the Continental Congress, and later on the committee that negotiated the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War.
  • Charles Pinckney was born

    Charles Pinckney was born
    Charles Pinckney was an early advocate for a stronger national government. He chaired the Confederation committee that wanted to strengthen the national government under the Articles of Confederation and and also served on the committee to persuade the states to pay their debts to the national government.
  • Provisional Congress

    Provisional Congress
    The Provincial Congress was a temporary government during the war. The elected delegates were mostly Lowcountry elite who raised an army, issued currency, and enforced non-importation of goods from England. The Provincial Congress also authorized their delegates to the Second Continental Congress to begin writing the Articles of Confederation.

    This treaty showed that the Backcountry residents would remain neutral in the struggle with Great Britain. However, the treaty didn’t last.

    The significance of this Constitution was to serve as the law of South Carolina until the arguments with England were resolved and this Constitution created a bicameral legislative.

    The Articles of Confederation was written to officially establish the first national government of the United States. Some states did not approve until a compromise was reached over the ownership of western lands.
  • South Carolina’s 2nd Constitution (1778)

    The 2nd Constitution had 3 changes to the first one. It was that the president would now be called the governor of South Carolina, The Church of England was now no longer the official state church, and representation was now slightly more equal between the Lowcountry and Backcountry.

    Shay’s Rebellion in Massachusetts raised fears of rebellion against the federal government, and the states called for a meeting in Philadelphia to fix the problems of the Articles of Confederation.
