    France Begins an Empire

    France Begins an Empire
    In this year, France begins to claim territories in North America. This began with Jaques Cartier's exploration. He journeyed the St. Lawrence River, finding that it was a suitable area to claim for France. This started the chain of many events, such as the founding of Quebec in 1608, the first permanent settlement in North America controlled by France.
  • Louisiana is Established

    At this point in time, the French were starting to establish territories farther away from the coast. Rober Cavelier was the explorer who made it possible for France to claim the whole Mississippi Valley. This territory was named Louisiana after King Louis XIV. This territory was very beneficial to France, because of it's location (on the Mississippi River) and teh amount of land.
  • Fort Duquesne is Built

    Fort Duquesne was the French Fort that served as the main place for French military. This fort was located at the intersection of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. This caused controversy because the British had already granted that land to their colonists. This resulted in a militia being formed to evict the French, and tensions rising.

    French and Indian War Officially Begins
    George Washington had just come into a role as officer at this point in time. He established Fort Necessity and a malitia was coming together under his leadership. This malitia had attacked a detached group of French soldiers. The french had forced Washington to retreat. This uprising pushed tensions over the edge and was the exposition of an official war.
  • British Triumph at Quebec

    This short battle was fought under the command of General James Wolfe. British troops had sneakily entered Quebec and captured French colonists nad their leader, Marquis de Montcalm. This victory had made the French realize that the British would be too strong, intelligent, and resourceful to overcome.
  • End of the War/Treaty of Paris

    End of the War/Treaty of Paris
    The end of the French and Indian War meant many chnaged for everyone who was involved in it. The British claimed all territory east of the Mississippi River. Spain gained control of French territories west of the Mississippi River. France was left with only a few small isalnds under their contol, and the Native Americans gained greater conflict with the British.
