  • The Education Act / "Butler Act"

    The Education Act / "Butler Act"
    The conservative government following the report by politican R. Butler introduced the idea of "secondary education for all".
    The aim was to offer free secondary education to all via the tripartite system of Grammar, Secondary Modern and Technical schools which where introduced.
    Pupils where allocated a place at a relevant school based upon their performance in the 11plus examination.
    The act also divided elementary education into primary and secondary phases.
  • O & A levels introduced

    O & A levels introduced
    GCE O & A levels introduced to replace the School certificate. In the main they where adopted by Grammar schools and originally used a grading system of 1 to 9, rather than A - E which was introduced later on.
  • Crowther Report

    Crowther Report
    The report highlighted that secondary modern schools where seen by many as the schools of failures of the 11 plus, and that they where destend to be "failures". The report made recommendations to introduce comprehensive education, and raising the school leaving age to 16.
  • Newsom Report

    Newsom Report
    The report identified that intelligence was not a fixed quality and that it could be modified by social and educational schemes.

    The circular stated the Labour government's intention to end selection at 11 and introduce a comprehensive education system

    Child centred learning introduced with experimental rather than didactic approaches to teaching and learning introduced

  • GCSEs Introduced

    GCSEs Introduced
    GCSE in all subjects introduced. They involved accessing learning by coursework with the application of knowledge rather than the memorisation of facts.
  • The Education Reform Act

    Introduced the National Curriculum, with core subjects of maths, english and science being a statutory requirement to be taught between the ages of 5 - 16. SATs introduced at 5, 7 and 11 with results to be published as measure of a school's quality.

    My mum being a single parent, pays for me to attend nusery both mornings and afternoons so she can attend work.
    I get told off for climbing through the Wendy House window and have to sit inside during playtime. I never have a detention again, until year 11 when I forget my trainers for PE!

    Set up to monitor and report on the quality in schools. As well as research into issues such as equality and teaching approaches.

  • KS2 SAT's

    KS2 SAT's
    I had been in Local Authority care from October 1998 - Jan 1999, and as such had missed out on a large amount of preperation for KS2 SATs. I didn't do as well as I could have, and the results were used by my secondary school to place me in sets for KS3.
  • Start Secondary School

    Following a lenghtly appeals process which involved the LEA and social workers, I finally started at Bishop Milner School.
    No one from my primary school goes to Bishop Milner with me.
  • School building condemed

    School building condemed
    School building is condemed as being un-safe. Portable classrooms are built on playground and remain for the next 5 years. I have last ICT lesson in sixth form in new building.
  • Curriculum 2000

    Introduced modular method of assessment with the introduction of AS levels and GNVQs are replaced by AVCE.
  • New Form Tutor

    On entry to "upper" school (KS4) my new form tutor agrees KS3 results are more reflective of my ability than KS2 and following YELIS tests it is agreed to move me to the higher band.

    Start sixth form to study:
    - A level ICT
    -AVCE (Double) Business (As not got grade B GCSE maths for Economics)
    -AS Geography
    Have to study Key Skills ICT and Communication alongside General Studies, which I delibratly failed the mock in, to get out of general studies on a Friday afternoon!
  • Finish Secondary School

    Leave secondary school with 2 A*, 4 x A, 3 x C Class not allowed to enter higher paper for English to protect school A* - C, even though set 2 and coursework was A/B standard. Told on day of exam. Parental complaints from majority of class.

    The Children Act: Every Child Matters
    Introduced to intergrate and improve communication between children services. The aim of ECM is to ensure all children get the support they need to - be healthy, - stay safe, -enjoy and achieve, -make a positive contribution, -achieve economic well-being.
  • AS Results

    AS Results
    A in ICT, AB in Business, and B Geography. Advised to drop Geography, and to complete offical qualification for the assistance I was providing in KS3 ICT lessons fpr UCAS points.
  • Finish Sixth Form

    Finish Sixth form with 3 x A's at A level (ICT, AVCE double Business).
  • Start at University

    Start at University
    I start at Aberystwyth University to study Management and Education Studies.
    At registration I switch degree scheme to Business Information Technology in the Computer Science department, after being treated like I was just a number at the management school induction.
  • Industrial Year

    Industrial Year
    Take an industrial year with HBOS working with their eCommerce and communication teams in Wolverhampton, Liverpool and Edingburgh. In May 2009 my contract becomes at risk due to the "economic crisis" with HBOS being brought out by Lloyds TSB, my offer of graduate employment is revoked. I learn more in these 12 months than I have in two years at uni.
  • Graduation

    Graduation
    I graduate from Aberystwyth University with 1st Class Honours in Business Information Technology (BSc). I'm the first student on the degree scheme that was introduced in 2001 to do so, and also the first female student to complete the scheme. (But I couldn't celebrate too much because I had to come do a Booster course...=P )
