Mary Cassatt was born on May 22, 1844. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, a town which is now part of Pittsburgh.

Mary began attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Mary was one of the few women there.

In 1866 Mary left to study the old Masters paintings in Paris. Cassatt felt that she could learn more in paris than at her school.

After the Franco-Prussian War erupted in 1870 Mary Cassatt returned to America. After a year and some financial troubles, mary returned to Europe.

Cassatt exhibited 11 of her paintings with the Impressionists in 1879. The show was a huge success.

For a while Mary did not produce any works of art, instead she became the caretaker of her sick mother and sister. In 1882 Mary's sister died. Shortly after mary resumed painting.

Mary's style was slowly changing from that of her company, the impressionists. In 1886 mary had her final excibition with the group the impressionists. After that mary did not identify herself with any particular company.

In 1910 Mary went on a trip to Egypt, the trip moved her and caused her to question her art. Mary stopped painting for two years.
