    Milada is the main character. She loves the stars. Terezie is Milada's best friend. They sometimes feel like sisters. Mama is Milada's mom. She is demanding, but very sweet. Ruzha is a quiet girl who attends school with Milada and Terezie. Milada is not good friends with her. Papa is Milada's father. He is fun and likes the stars, too. Jaro is Milada's 15 year old brother. Jaro likes to torment Milada and her friends. Babichka is Milada's grandmother. She looks out for Milada.

    Milada and her family and friends live in Lidice, Czechoslovakia. Through the story, she travels to Puschkau, Poland and Furstenberg, Germany and Prague, Czechoslovakia.

    World War II starts. Terezie and Milada have been best friends for a really long time. Milada's family is not poor, but not very wealthy either. They do not have enough money to get sugar so some families share. Czechoslovakia is being targeted as a place that Nazis will take over and destroy. Although no one knows it yet, Milada gets a special pin from her grandmother. She is told "keep it forever and always, always, always remember who she is."

    Nazis come and arrest them. Papa and Jaro are lead outside with a Nazi. Milada, Mama, Anechka and Babichka are lead in a different direction from the men and boys. The women and girls are lead to a school gym to sleep with all the other women and girls in Lidice. Everyone is waiting for the terror that is about to surprise them

    Milada wakes up and then she is told to stand in a line with other girls and boys. She notices that Ruzha is headed toward the line, too. When the Nazis finish getting all the kids they want, the children are lead into a classroom. The Nazis tell them to undress. After they get undressed, they have to get a doctor's apointment. Milada is embarrassed. Later on she is sent back to her family. She also notices that everyone that had the appointment has light hair and light colored eyes.

    That morning Milada is taken away from her family. She is pulled away from her family. Only Ruzha and Milada get on the bus. Milada is afraid that she will never see her family again.

    Milada and Ruzha arrive at Puschkau, Poland. They get off the bus. Ruzha and Milada join the line with the other girls from the different buses. Milada is lead into the Center for German Girls. All the girls are lead to their sleeping rooms. Before they go to sleep, they have to salute to Hitler. Milada is afraid of where her Papa, Mama and everyone in her family are.

    Milada is told that her name is Eva. She argues and yells, but the woman will not budge. She is told that if she speaks in any language other than German, then she will get punished. She is sad because she struggles with German.

    Today is her first day of school. She starts to learn German. Franziscka (Ruzha) seems to enjoy the classes. Milada makes sure that her pin is still clipped inside her shirt everyday. Whenever she rubs or holds her pin, she remembers Babichka and her family. She starts to forget about her family. She can't remember her name anymore.

    Eva finally remembers her name, Milada. She looks in the mirror one day and sees a completely different person--a young woman instead of a girl. Eva becomes friends with another girl at the center named Liesel.

    She goes to see the stars with Leisel. They go into a church which used to be a Christian church, but was turned into a place to praise Hitler. They call the church "evil." Leisel tells Eva her real name, Katarzyna. Eva tells Leisel that her real name is Milada. They promise each other that they will call each other their real names when they are at the church. Eva shows Leisel her pin. Leisel tells Eva that she is lucky to have something from home.

    The girls take a trip to town that day. After the trip for food, the bus stops at a candy stand. They get to use the money that was given to them early that morning to spend on treats. At the candy stand, Eva thinks that she sees her grandmother. She goes over to her and says "hi" and tries to touch the woman. The woman yells "Nazi." Miss Fraulein hits the woman with a club untill she is laying on the ground bleeding to death.

    They girls are notified that they are going to be adopted into their new German families.
  • Climax/ Turning Point

    Today she is adopted into a German family. She rides in a car with her new parents, the Werners. She sees burned buildings and smells a foul odor. They arrive at their house. She meets her new siblings, Elsbeth and Peter. She is shown her new room. She is mad at these people for not giving her back to her parents. She rubs the pin, but can't remember her real name.

    Eva gets in trouble for trying to open Vater's (father) office. Eva is told to never go in there because it is Top Secret. Eva then gets curious of what Vater has in his office.

    Eva gets a blue dress for the adoption party that her Mutter (mother) and Vater have planned for her. She notices that she can't rememeber any words in Czech at all. She feels like a princess when she wears the dress. Eva feels that she won't ever see her parents again.

    Today was Eva's adoption party. At her party, her mother is awarded a medal. The medal was bronze. Eva found out that you get a bronze medal if you have three children. You get silver if you have four children and gold if you have six or more children. They eat cake and Eva has a lot of fun.

    Eva and Elsbeth hear signs of war. Mutter is afraid and worried by the sounds outside. Mutter listens to her radio all the time so that she can know what is going on. They see bombs in the distance at night. They also hear airplanes and helicopters at night

    While Elsbeth and Eva are walking home from the woods one day, Eva hears a familiar song. She notices that the song is coming from women singing while working at the Ravensbruck Woman's Work Camp. She tries to climb over the fence, but Elsbeth pulls her back. Elsbeth tells her to NEVER go there again or they will get in trouble.

    Herr Werner ( Vater or Father) leaves the house with Peter and their dog. Mutter, Elsbeth, and Eva all have to go into the bomb shelter.
  • Resolution: 2

    Resolution: 2
    Russian soliders invade their bomb shelter. Mutter is taken upstairs and asked questions about Herr Werner while Eva and Elsbeth are downstairs being watched by the soliders. The soliders destroy the house and bring Mutter back downstairs.

    One day Elsbeth decides that they need a gun. She sneaks out with Eva early in the morning. When Eva and Elsbeth are in the woods, Elsbeth asks Eva if she is a Jew. Eva gets really mad at Elsbeth so she scratches, hits, and pulls every part of Elsbeth's body. Later on that night when Eva goes to rub her pin, it is gone. She goes into the woods to look for it with the uninvited help of Elsbeth. Elsbeth finds it. The girls make up.
  • Resolution: 4

    One morning Elsbeth hears Mutter crying. Eva and Elsbeth go to Mutter's room. She tells them that Hitler died. Germany surrenders and America wins.

    Eva is taken away from Elsbeth and Mutter by the International Red Cross professionals. They ask if Milada can come with them. Then suddenly Eva remembers that her name is Milada. She leaves with the Red Cross People. She gets on a bus and is told that Papa, Jaro,and Babichka are all dead,but her mom is still alive and at the Disabled Persons Center.

    Resolution: 6
    Her mom finally becomes well enough to walk again and eat normally. Milada and Mama are excited and happy to be home. They live with Mam's cousin. They have faith in each other. Mama is amazed that Milada kept the pin that Babichka gave her. They love each other so much.
