The First Folio was printed seven years after the death of William Shakespeare in 1616. Several further editions of William Shakespeare's works were published in the course of time.

The Firat Folio was published. It excluded the Perciles and the Two Noble Kingsman. The folio contained 900 pages and 36 of his plays. It was also the first folio book ever published in England that was devoted exclusively to plays.

The content of the First Folio was registered. Registration also provided an opportunity to invoke a form of censorship and the means to suppress too much freedom of thought and criticism of the crown and public affairs.
