Soon after Emily's admission, a typhoid epidemic swept the school. Both Maria and Elizabth got sick of tuberculosis and died. Consequently, Emily and her sister Charlotte left the school because of the poor conditions.

The three survivor sisters and Branwell (her brother) were educated in home. In order to get entertained, they created a ficticious world about which they wrote. This was their way to be creative in the very boring an isolated village they lived.
