He had been sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the state and following the Rivonia Trial. He served 27 years instead of a life sentence and was released by president F.W. De Klerk due to growing domestic and international pressure, and the fear of a racial civil war.

    Hong Kong, Britain ’s crown colony reverted to Chinese sovereignty and ended 156 years of British rule. Hong Kong has then been renamed Hong Kong special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. This is significant because Hong Kong would not be what it is now if it weren't for Britain handing back Hong Kong.
