    Senator George Norris from Nebraska proposed the Amendment.
  • Why they wanted to make this amendment

    At the time the amendment was proposed it was much easier to get to DC. Trains were working and almost every elected official had a vehicle to get to DC much quicker than in the past
  • The south

    The Southern states really pushed for the 20th amendment because it was around the Great Depression time and they did not like waiting months because of the lame duct period. They had important topics they needed to discuss and act on.

    The amendment states that on January 3rd congress will meet every year on that date. That date is also when the new congress will meet for the first time.

    Section 1 also states that on January 3rd at noon Congress representatives and senators will be done.

    The amendment states that on January 20th the President and Vice President will be done at noon.
  • Ratifying the amendment

    On January 23, 1933 Congress passed the 20th amendment over 10 years after it was proposed.
  • Taking effect

    Section 5 states that on October 15 of the year the amendment takes effect, the first and second section will go into effect.
