    William created the Bates Method, which were a series of treatments that improve eye sight. After many years, Huxley was given this treatment when he was 45. Huxley had poor vision due to a disease, he stated that the treatment actually improved his vision.     The death of Huxley's mother was tragic for Huxley. Huxley was mature at the age of 14, and was well educated. He handled the death of his mother very well, but he started to have philosophical thoughts about the human fragility.     Because of the disease, Huxley's draft for World War I was revoked. He was also forced to change his science major to literature due to incapability.     Ernest Rutherford infers the nucleus and atomic structure by observing alpha scattering. In Brave New World, Rutherford is one of the idols of the utopian society. In Huxley's vision, Rutherford is the person who helped create genetic engineering.     The economy of England went into a recession after the war. Huxley writes Antic Hay dedicated to the post World War I era. He satirizes the lifeless people looking for love, money, and companionship, since many middle classmen were behaving similarly.
