  • Floppy Disk

    Although the floppy disk was developed in the late 60's, it did not become available to the public until early 1971. It was released with a disk diameter of 8 inches. This was a big step in being able to easily transport data around and became a helpful tool for students and workers.
  • Email

    In 1971 Ray Tomilson developed the first system to be able to send electronic mail to a different host in something called ARAPNET. Email has become such a critical and integrated part of our daily lives. It has also helped the environment by giving people the option to go "paperless".
  • Mobile Phone

    In 1973 Martin Cooper presented the first mobile phone and was able to make the first phone call. He worked for Motorola and is credited as the inventor of the mobile phone. This has become a necessity for most people. It has evolved from only making phone calls, to recording video, taking pictures, sending texts, and having the entire internet in our pockets.
  • Digital Camera

    In 1975 the Digital Camera was invented by Steven Sasson. He was an engineer at Kodak and he was able to make the digital camera using various parts he found around the factory. The digital camera has become a such a common item that nearly everyone has one, especially since they became integrated into cellphones.
  • Sony Walkman

    On July 1st, 1979 the first Walkman was placed on sale. It was produced by Sony and it was a result of the current CEO being a music lover and wanting a device that was portable so he could listen to music on flights. While the Walkman was not as critical as some other inventions in the 70s, it impacted our media culture in a big way.
