    Emmitt Till was a 14-year old boy from Chicago who went to visit his uncle in Mississippi for the summer. He flirted with a white girl. Later that night, three whtie men came and took him from his house. He was found later in a river. The men were found not guility. The mother choose to have an open casket funeral to show the world what these men did to her little boy. It really woke the nation up.

    Montgomery Bus Boycott

    After Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to sit in the back of the bus, the black community stood behind her and refused to use city busses. Blacks were the majority of the customers for the busses. The boycott hurt the pockets of the city. SCLC was formed out of this event. It was a hug step toward desegregation. It showed mass support for the cause. It was an achievable goal.

    Nashville Sit-Ins
    Lunch counters refused to serve black customers, but the blacks could still buy their products in the store. They sat at the lunch cutners every day waiting to be served. They were trained in noviolance in order to resist fighting back in assults. The police came in and arrest the blacks and then a new group would sit down. This continued for weeks. SNCC was formed.

    The Student Nonvoilent Coordinating Committee broke away from SCLC. It was lead by Mooses and Anne Moody. The goals were to get yound people involved in the movement becuase it was their futre and to shift the focus from Church leadership. They were wiling to take more extreme measures because they did not have as much to lose. The group was interractial.

    Freedom Rides
    The freedom rides where buses traveling from Washington DC to New Orleans. It was caused by the South ignoring the Supreme Court decissions that ban segregation in interstate travel. As the riders approached the deep South, they were meet with firebombs, and assults. Bobby Kennedy threated Gov. Patterson to protect the riders or federal troops would be sent it. Federal troops did get sent in. When the riders reached Mississippi, they were nonvioletly arrested.

    James Meredith was denied acceptace to the college because of his race. The court cause ruled he must be accepted. Gov. Barnett declared James can not attend and physically blocked the enterence. Federal troops were sent in. There were many violent riots. James graduates in Aug. 1963. The event forced JFK's hand.

    Birmingham Confrontation
    The event targeted segregation and hoped to get media attention. MLK started the demonstraton. He chooses to go to jail where he writes his famous letter. Students are involved and are shot with fire hoses and had dogs released on them. This gets the media attention and it forces JFK to come out publicly in their support. This leads to the Civil Rights bill.

    This event showed Kennedy support for his Civil Rights Bill. Behind the scences, an SNCC member was going to critize Kennedy for not doing anything sooner. Older civil rights leaders talked him out of it claiming that it would no help anything. MLK makes his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. It is a national, peaceful march that extends beyond the black community.

    This event is important event because the African Americas chose not to take revenge but to act in a positive manner. This was a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement becuase the focus shifted to voting rights. JFK was working on solidifing descrimination.This location was choose for the bombing because its is where the Birmingham confrontation begain.

    This was a time for the push of voting rights. It wanted to get rid of voting restrictions, such as tests, and to get blacks registered. Many northern college students came down to send there summer helping the movement. In the end, many blacks were registered and the Missisippi Freedom Democratic Party was established. The event gained national attention for the cause.

    This event targeted voting rights. The Gov. came out and stopped them. The police were whereing gas masks and were using physical force to push the black back. The outcome was that there were no more literacy test, blacks were able to register to vote at free will, and federal officals were present at the polls. The event solidified national support. It was the last major event in the civil rights movement because segregation and voting rights were now fixed by laws.

    The Voting Rights Act applied a nationwide prohibition against the denial or abridgment of the right to vote on the literacy tests on a nationwide basis. Jurisdictions covered by these special provisions could not implement any change affecting voting.The Attorney General could request that federal observers monitor activities within the county's polling place.

    Little Rock Crisis
    The event targeted segregation. National Guard sent in by Gov. to stop 9 blacks students to enter Central High School. 8 of 9 try to go, but turned down. The 9th tries to enter by herself. Eisenhower tells Gov to protect the black children. Eisenhower has to send in army. The event forces Eisenhower to uphold the Supreme Court decissions. The blacks do go to schools and help to change the views of some of the white students towars blacks.
