Wilma

1956 and 1960 Olympics

  • Basketball and running.

    Wilma is 6 feet tall and the coach starts playing her in basketball games and she plays very well. Wilma is nicknamed "Skeeter" which is short for mosquito because that's what she reminds her teammates of. She starts winning track races during the off-season.
  • Winning and losing.

    Wilma wins all her races at home but when she goes to a meet in Alabama she loses every race. Wilma is disappointed about this but coach Ed Temple invites her to a track camp in Nashville.
  • Summer training and open doors.

    Summer training is very intense but Wilma Works hard. She goes to a big meet in Philadelphia and wins all of her races. She then goes to Seattle for Olympic tryouts and qualifies to represent the United States.
  • Olympics.

    Wilma goes to Melbourne, Australia for the Olympics. She helps her team get bronze in the 4x100 relay.
  • Graduation and a baby.

    Wilma graduates from Burt High school. She gives birth to her daughter Yolanda. She makes it to Tennessee State University.
  • College and racing.

    Wilma enters Tennessee State as a elementary education and psychology major. She is also a star athlete, she breaks the 200 meter dash world record with 22.9 seconds.
  • Summer olympics in Rome.

    Wilma goes to Rome, Italy for the 1960 Olympics. She wins three gold medals and she became the first American woman to do win three gold medals in a single Olympics.
  • Barriers begin to crumble.

    Wilma live in an area where black and white people are separated. But, every one wants to meet her and black and white citizens come together in a parade celebrating her success.
