  • Jackie Robinson

    Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play baseball in the National League for the Brooklyn Dodgers. This challenged the segregation of American sports and was a start in breaking the color barrier.
  • Sputnik

    In October 1957, the Soviet Union Launched the first man made Orbital Satellite into space.
  • Little Rock Nine

    In 1957, Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, was forced to accept its first nine African American students. The national Guard was called out by Governor Orval Faubus to prevent the students from attending classes. President Eisenhower sent the US Army’s 101st airborne unit to escort the students to and from school.
  • National Defense Education Act

    In response to the SU’s launch of Sputnik, Congress passed the National Defense Education Act, which pumped over $775 million into educational programs over four years, especially those programs that focused on math and science.
  • The Freedom Riders

    African American and White volunteers undertook bus rides tp test the enforcement of the US Supreme Court decision prohibiting segregation on interstate transportation and to protest segregated waiting rooms in southern terminals.
  • Kennedy’s assassination

    Shots rang out as Kennedy’s motorcade made its way through the streets of Dallas, Texas. He was rushed to the Parkland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
  • The Baby Boom

    Following WWII (1946-1964) marriage rates rose which lead to the largest generation in UD history known as The Baby Boom.
  • The Civil Rights Act

    The Act prohibited discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, and discrimination on the basis of sex. The Act was passed in 1964, though women still receive lower pay than men.
  • The American Indian Movement

    In 1968 a group of American Indian activists convened a gathering of two hundred people in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group advocated for the Native Americans who were living in poverty and were discriminated against.
