  • The First Computer Built

    The first computer, called the ENIAC, was invented by J. Eckert and John Mauchly. It weighed almost 50 tons and took up almost 2,000 square feet, but allowed for the advancement to computers today.
  • D-Day

    Also known as the Normandy Landings, D-day is considered the largest seaborne invasion in history. It was the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II, and marked the beginning of the end of German control.
  • Cold War begins

    1945 is regarded as the beginning of the Cold War, a conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union that included threats of nuclear warfare. It began after the surrender of Nazi Germany, when the shaky alliance between the US and USSR began to fall apart.

  • Franklin D. Roosevelt Died

    FDR, the nation's longest serving president, suffered a brain hemorrhage and passed away. This left Vice President Truman to step up and continue leading the United States through the second World War.
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki Bombed

    The United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima during World War II, and three days later dropped another on the city Nagasaki. It is the one and only instance of any nation using nuclear warfare. It killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, and effectively ended the war with Japan.
  • United Nations Founded

    The United Nations was founded October 24, 1945. It is an organization meant to keep peace and improve relations among nations. It helps nations work together to tackle many problems. It is made up of 51 countries.
  • World War II ends

    Following the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrenders to the US. The war officially ended September 2, 1945, when formal surrender documents were signed onboard the USS Missouri.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was established by President Truman and offered American economic and military support to any country threatened by an outside authoritarian force. This was meant to further the idea of containment and to slow the speed of communism, specifically through the Soviet Union.
  • Marshall Plan passed

    The Marshall Plan was a United States initiative to provide economic help to Western European countries following the devastating effects of World War II. The plan was meant t help countries recover from Nazi control.
  • North Atlantic Treaty signed

    The North Atlantic Treaty was a military alliance signed by countries from both Europe and North America. This treaty formed the NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which has grown to include 30 different countries in the alliance.
