• President Roosevelt Elected

    The 1940 election was different than any past election. This is because during this election, Theodore Roosevelt was elected as President of the United States for the third time in a row. He was the first president to serve for three terms.
  • Pearl Harbor

    On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the U. S. naval base located at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. Up until this time, the U. S. had attempted to stay neutral as World War II raged on in the Eastern Hemisphere. This attack, however, changed that. Over 2,400 American seamen were killed that day. The United States responded by joining WWII and sending over 950 tanks filled with food, trucks, guns and ammunition to Britain.

    On June 4-7, 1942, the U. S. military had its first major victory against the Japanese fleet. The battle was called he Battle of the Midway because it was fought on the Midway Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Tehran Conference

    On November 28, 1943, The U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Josef Stalin met to plan an invasion of Europe. The code name was Operation Overlord.
  • D-Day

    On June 6, 1944, D-Day, also known as the Normandy Invasion occurred. One hundred and fifty-five thousand Allied troops landed in France. The forces came from many nations including: the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, and the United Kingdom. This invasion of Europe lead to the liberation of Paris.
  • Atomic Bombing

    On August 6, 1945, President Harry S. Truman gave the go-ahead for the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, the United States dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki, Japan.
  • Independence for the Philippines

    On July 4, 1946, the United States gives independence to the island nation of the Philippines, ending four hundred and twenty-five years of dominance by the west.
  • Truman Doctrine

    On March 12, 1947, the Truman Doctrine was announced to the U.S. Congress. It was then passed, granting $400 million in aid to Greece and Turkey to battle Communist terrorism.
  • Truman Presidential Win

    During the 1948 election, Thomas Dewey was supposed to win. However, Harry S. Truman rallied from behind and captured his first president election. Truman won the election with less than 50% of the popular votes.
  • NATO

    On April 4, 1949, NATO, the North American Treaty Organization, was formed. The treaty stated that any attack against one nation would be considered an attack against them all. The countries that formed the organization were the United States, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
  • Korean War

    On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began its three year conflict when troops of North Korea, backed with Soviet weaponry, invade South Korea. This lead to U. S. intervention when U. S. ground forces and air strikes were approved against North Korea.
