  • President McKinley Assassinated

    The 25th president of the United States President McKinley was assassinated at his appearance at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. He was meeting people when Czolgosz came up and shot him twice. He was shot on September 6, and died a few days later on the 14th.
  • End of the Phillipine-American War

    The conflict between the United States and the Philippines began after the Spanish-American War, when Spain sold the Philippines to America for $20 million. The Philippines resisted the United States, and fought for their independence until the United States won and occupied the Philippines.
  • Radio Broadcasting Invented

    The broadcasting of music, talk shows, and other segments began experimentally in 1905, and was originally invented by Italian Guglielmo Marconi. This allowed for nationwide communication.

  • Franz Ferdinand Assassinated-Beginning of WWI

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated along with his wife by Serbian Gavrilo Pricip. This conflict led to Austria declaring war on Serbia, their allied getting involved, and the beginning of World War I.

  • Panama Canal Completed

    The Panama Canal, a man-made water way over a 50-mile stretch of the Panama isthmus, linking together the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This amazing feat made it possible to pass by the Americas without having to go all the way around the tip of South America.
  • The Sinking of the Lustiana

    The British ocean liner Lustiana was suck by German U-boats on May 7, 1915. This sinking killed 1,195 people, 128 of which were Americans. This event gave reason for the United States' entrance into World War I.
  • Beginning of the Great Migration

    The Great Migration, the migration of African Americans from the South to the North, roughly began in 1916. African Americans moved from the rural area of the South to the North, to begin to build their lives, communities, and culture after the effects of slavery.
  • The Zimmerman Telegram

    The Zimmerman Telegram was a telegram intercepted by Britain by Germany to Mexico in which Germany made an alliance with Mexico if the United States joined the war with the Allies. In it Mexico was promised all the lands lost to it in the Mexican-American War. This event hastened America's declaration of war against Germany.

    On April 6, 1917, the United States declared war against Germany and joined the Allies in World War I. This declaration came after many instances of German aggression despite American neutrality, and was only a few days after President Woodrow Wilson requests war before Congress on April 2.
  • Selective Service Act Signed

    The Selective Service Act was signed into law by Woodrow Wilson, and required all men aged 21-30 to register for military service. This Act was to raise a national army for the United States for WWI.
  • Battle of Cantigny

    The Battle of Cantigny was the first major American battle in World War I. In this battle, American soldiers captured the village of Cantigny in France from Germany, and held it up against many counterattacks. This gave the French confidence in America.
  • Eighteenth Amendment Ratified

    The United States Constitution's Eighteenth Amendment, prohibition of alcohol, was ratified on January 16,1919, by the needed amount of states. It banned the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors", and caused a lot of resistance until it was repealed in 1933 with the Twenty-first Amendment.
