  • Bell's Telephone

    This is the day when Alexander Grahm Bell spoke into his invention the telephone and it successfully transmitted the message to Mr. Watson.
  • Centennial Exhibition

    The Centennial Exhibition celebrated the 100th year of America's independence.
  • Battle of Little Big Horn

    The battle of Little Bighorn was the result of the Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne Indian tribes missing the deadline to move to reservation land. So the U.S army confronted them about this and a battle broke out, The Native Americans were outnumbered and soon lost the battle.
  • Election of 1876

    The Republican candidate for the election of 1876, Rutherford Hays ultimately won the election. However, Democrat candidate, Samuel Tilden actually won more votes, but three states the votes were disputed. Congress appointed a committee to look into and decided to award the disputed ballots to Hays. In return, Hays declared that he would end reconstruction.
  • The Great Strike of 1877

    The Great strike of 1877 was the very first industrial strike to take place in America. It stretched from the East coast to the West coast and had to be broken up by the U.S military which resulted in the deaths of several workers.
  • Edison Patents the Phonograph

    Edison was trying to create an invention that would allow for telephone messages to be transcribed on paper and then sent as a telegram. Then Edison had a thought, what if he could record telephone messages. This led to the invention of the phonograph which allowed for people to speak into it and then have it replay the message back.
  • First Female Telephone Operator

    When telephone operators were first needed teenage boys were hired, but the teenage boys often played pranks. Therefore the Boston Telephone Exchange hired Emma Mills Nutt as a telephone operator.
  • Patent for the Cash Register

    In 1878, while on a ship to Europe saloon owner James Ritty saw a machine that counted every time the ship's propellors completed a revolution. This gave him the idea to create something similar but for money. This led to him creating the first cash register.
  • Election of 1880

    In the election of 1880, Republican James Garfield defeated Democrat Winfield Scott Hancock. Garfield won by what is still the narrowest margin of popular votes for a presidential election.
  • Assassination of President Garfield

    On July 2nd, 1881, Charles Guiteau shot President Garfield twice at a train station. Doctors tried to recover the bullet from the President's back but this led to the president developing an infection and dying a couple of monthes later.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    The Chinese Exclusion Act greatly reduced the number of Chinese immigrants from entering the United States.
  • Election of 1884

    Democrat Grover Cleveland won the election of 1884 despite his affair that produced a son coming to light during the campaign. His opponent Republican James Blaine caused suspicion when the opposing party released letters that revealed that Blaine had received bribes.
  • Haymarket Riot

    The Haymarket Riot started out as a protest near Haymarket Square, however someone threw a bomb at the police and as a result, eight people died from the violence that followed.
  • Dawes Act

    The Dawes Act was originally intended to help Native American families by breaking up the land into individual family plots of land. This actually hurt the Natives because they were not used to living without their tribe.
  • Election of 1888

    Republican Benjamin Harrison defeated Democrat Grover Cleveland in a very tame campaign in which Cleveland did not campaign at all and Harrison would give speeches from his front porch.
  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    The U.S armies Cavalry surrounded a group of Indians and demanded that they lay down their weapons and surrender to them. A fight broke out and one of the sides fired a shot. This led to a battle that left around 150 Indians dead and 25 Cavalry members dead.
  • Election of 1892

    The election of 1892 was the first time that a former president became president again in an election. Democrat Grover Cleveland defeated Republican Benjamin Harrison for the presidency.
  • Pullman Strike

    The Pullman Strike was a railroad strike and boycott that took place in the midwest. As a gesture of goodwill President Cleveland created labor day to give the workers a day off.
  • election of 1896

    Republican William McKinley defeated Democrat-populist William Jennings Bryan. This election was very important as there were a lot of economical problems facing the nation as there had been a depression in 1893. The people voted for the president that they believed could handle these problems the best.
  • Spanish-American War

    Cuba attempted to rebel from Spain and to curb this rebellion, Spain implemented very brutal strategies. Soon Americans began to feel bad for Cuban rebels and soon Spain and the U.S declared war. Spain was no match for America and Spain surrendered on July 17th.
  • Election of 1900

    Republican President William McKinley defeated Democrat nominee William Jennings Bryan for the second time.
