The Spanish American war was fought between Spain and the United States. An explosion of an American Ship in a port in Cuba, America took this as an attack from Spain. At the time, Cuba was revolting against Spain, and America backed this up. After America won, they were solidified as a power house. They had took down a declining Spain who had previously been a world power.
