  • U.S. forces Native Americans to reservations

    U.S. government orders all Native Americans onto reservations all over the West. This issue would eventually lead to the Great Sioux War of 1876.
  • Invention of the Telephone

    Alexander Graham bell invents the telephone. This date is when he was awarded his first patent, and few days later he made his first successful phone call to his assistant, Thomas Watson. Fun fact: The first words ever said on a telephone were, “Mr. Watson, come here.”
  • Invention of the Lightbulb

    Thomas Edison invents the light bulb, changing the world entirely. This incredible revelation in electricity turned into an everyday convenience that affected everybody’s lives. Not only was this an invention of a new source of light, but the invention of the modern electricity industry.
  • Orientation Telephone Company

    Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison work together to form the Oriental Telephone Company. They formed the company in New York, where they would work together to sell telephones and other technologies to the rest of the world.
  • Statue of Liberty

    The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States from France. This wondrous neoclassical sculpture was designed and sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and his fellow team of artists. This magnificent gift to the U.S. was a symbol of friendship, and the similarity that both countries valued liberty and freedom.
  • Invention of Basketball

    The sport of basketball was invented by James Naismith. He actually created the game of basketball as part of an assignment at a YMCA training school, in Springfield, Massachusetts.
  • Financial Panic of 1893

    A financial panic occurs when the New York Stock Exchange collapses. This ultimately leads to a four year long economic depression.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    Hawaii is annexed by the United States. With Sanford B. Dole as their first governor, Hawaii was officially a United States territory and an independent republic.
