    When samurai believed that the shogun had failed to stand up to Western powers, they forced him to step down. The leaders wanted to make Japan powerful enough so that they could compete with the Western forces. They wanted the emperor to make new policies that would stengthen the country and military.

    After the U.S. ship"Maine" was blown up, Americans assumed that Spain was behind it and declared war. Spain was defeated in Cuba, and some of their naval fleets were destroyed in both Cuba and the Philippines. It only took three months for the U.S. to win the war.

    This began when the Boxers started attacking missionaries and Chinese people that had converted to Christianity. They later invaded foreign compounds in Beijieng. During ths, they held hostages for 55 days.

    Intense rivalries and military alliances led to the start of WWI. The main battle was between the Central Powers and the Allied powers. The U.S. helped the allies win when they entered.

    This treaty was named after the French Palace Verssailles, where the signing took place. Some parts of the treaty were wrote in order to weaken Germany. Becauase of this, the Germans became very angry, but had no choice other than to agree to them.

  • Germany attacks Poland / WW II begins

    Hitler launches an attack on Poland, beginning WWII. The Germans used a new attack strategy, called blitzkrieg. It emphasized speed and coordination throughout the entire military force.
  • Pearl Harbor attack

    After months of Japanesen planning a surprise attack on the U.S., the naval base Pearl Harbor was bombed. The attack begun on a sunday morning, after two weeks of Japanese aircraft flying overseas. The attack was short, but almost 2400 Americans were killed during it, as well as all the battleships that were resting in the harbor.
  • U.S. declares war on Japan

    After the Pearl Harbor attack, the U.S. decided that they were going to enter the war instead of stay low. Three days after they declared war, both Germany and Italy declared war the U.S.. With this, the U.S. joined the Allied forces against the Axis Powers.

    Over 150,000 Allied forces invaded France on D-Day. The troops landed on the beach and forced their way through the German defenses. It was a big win for the Allies, but it came with a high number of casualties.

    After Japan did not respond to the Allies demand for surrender, plans to use an atom bomb went into action. When the bomb was dropped onto Hiroshima from an American plane, there was a catastrophic amount of destruction. More than 70,000 people in the city were instantly killed, and thousands of building were obliterated.

    Conflict between North and South Korea began when the North invaded the South. Chinese troops fought with the North, and the war ended with both nations dividing. Little ground was gained on both sides, but about 2.5 million people died.

    When the South vietnam's president cancelled elections that would have benefited the North, war began. The South recieved help from the U.S., but they had a very slim chance of winning, so they started to withdraw. By 1973, the last U.S. soldiers left, and Vietnam unified as a Communist state in 1975.
