  • The Louisiana Purchase

    President Thomas Jefferson acquired a large amount of land from France which doubled the size of the United States.
  • The War of 1812

    This war was caused by a conflict between the United States and Great Britain due to British interference with American trade and oppressive behavior towards American sailors in order for them to change sides. This war ended in 1815.
  • Missouri Compromise

    This Legislation was created to create a balance between slave and free states by admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    This was a statement by president James Monroe stating that the Western Hemisphere is off-limits to further European colonization.
  • Indian Removal Act

    This act allowed the forced removal of Nrtive American tribes from their land in the Southwest to areas west of the Mississippi river, which led to the "Trail of Tears".
  • Mexican-American War

    This war was caused by a conflict between the United States and Mexico over land. This also led to the annexation of a large portion of Mexico including California. This war ended in 1848.
  • Sceneca Falls Convention

    This convention was the first woman's rights convention in the United States. This advocated for woman's suffrage and equal rights. This convention was where the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    This act was very controversial and was met with a lot of different reactions. This legislation was part of the compromise of 1850; laws that were passed in order to address the issue of slavery and its spread into the newly territories of America. The Fugitive Slave Act was specifically created to consider the captured slaves that had tried to escape and made it mandatory for all citizens to assist the government in turning in runaway slaves.
  • Dred Scott Vs. Sanford

    This was a Supreme Court decision that ruled enslaved African Americans as non-citizens and could not sue or ask for justice in federal courts. A lot of colonists and African Americans did not react well to this decision.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This was Abraham Lincolns executive order that declared the freedom of enslaved people in the Confederate-held territory during the Civil War.
