Thomas Jefferson became the United States third president on March 4, 1801 and served until March 4, 1809. Jefferson defeated John Adams in the presidential election. During his presidency, Jefferson's administration worked to reduce taxes, national debt and government spending. Jefferson played a major part in the acquisition of the Louisiana Purchase as well.

Marbury vs Madison was a Supreme Court case that took place in 1803. This case established the principle of judicial review in the United States. This begin when it was issued that William Marburry was to be commissioned as justice of peace, but James Madison refused to do this. In February of 1803, the court ruled 4-0 against Marbury.

The Louisiana Purchase was an exchange of french land to the United States. The United States purchased the western half of the Mississippi river. Over 800,000 acres of land were purchased during this exchange. Jefferson was the president at the time of the Louisiana Purchase and was the one who sent James Monroe to aid. The Louisiana purchase doubled our country in size and expanded the nation toward the west.

The goal of Lewis and Clark expedition was to explore the and both from the Louisiana Purchase and the Pacific Northwest. Merriweather Lewis was the leader of this expedition but was helped by Sacajawea as an interpreter. During their expedition Lewis and Clark described and discovered many new species of animals such as the grizzly bear and the mountain goat.

The Embargo Act of 1807 by the U.S. Congress closed all U.S. ports to export and restricted imports from Britain. This act was the result of British and French interference with U.S. merchant ships. The Embargo was later lifted in 1809, but the British continued to interfere.

In 1800 congress made it illegal fro Americans to trade slaves with other nations. Later in 1808 the "Act Prohibiting the Importation of Slaves" took place. This law prevented any new slaves from being brought into the United States.

The Creek War was a conflict between Native American tribes, Europeans and Americans. The war ended with the victory of the U.S. over the Creek Indians. The Creek people were separated into the Red Sticks and White Sticks. The red wanted war and the white represented peace. The Creek Indians were also British allies but were still defeated by the Americans in this war.

The Hartford Convention was a series of secret meetings held in Hartford, Connecticut. During these meetings, New England leaders discussed political problems and the ongoing war that was taking place. Things like the Louisiana Purchase, the three-fifths compromise and the Embargo were also discussed at these meetings.

In 1814, the British invaded D.C. during the war of 1812. The British chose to burn Washington D.C. because it had a minimal amount of defenses and was easily accessible from the Chesapeake Bay. The Burning took place of August 24 and was put out the next day wen a storm came through.

In Coloma, California gold was found by James W. Marshall. The news of gold being discovered brought nearly 300,000 people to California from all around the United States. During the gold rush, Indigenous societies were pushed off their land by people moving to find gold. These people were known as "forty-niners". Half of the people moving to California arrived by sea and the other half by land.
