1800 - 1876

  • 1801 - Jefferson Becomes the Perisedent

    Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson campaigned for Congress for a period of six days until Jefferson won the election, breaking their tie. Burr was elected vice president.
  • 1803 - Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana was purchased from the French, This purchase was made by Jefferson and this also doubled the size of the United States. Louisiana Purchase was the most significant purchase as it spread the united states toward the west.
  • 1812 - Invasion of Canada

    President Madison approved the Invasion of British Canada. this plan turned out to be really bad but in July General William Hull, led an army from Michigan and marched his ragtag into Canada. the Canadian didn't seem to be interested in his ideas and British troops pushed him out of Canada.
  • 1814 - Burning of D.C

    British troops captured D.C. during the war. Americans faced their worst defeat. this led to British to set fire to the white house. when the British were headed for the capital thousands of people fled D.C.
  • 1823 - The Monroe Doctrine

    A United States plan that dealt with Latin America. essentially warned European countries against attempting to conquer or interfere in this region as it would be considered an act of aggression that necessitated US involvement.
  • 1830 - Indian Removal

    The president ought to negotiate with the Native American tribes in the South about their evacuation to government property west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their ancestral territories.
  • 1846 - Mexican American War

    The Mexican War starts, and the US declared war on Mexico in an effort to take over California and other Southwest territory. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marks the end of the conflict. In exchange for $15 million, Mexico agreed to cede the region that includes modern-day California, Nevada, Utah, most of New Mexico, Arizona, and portions of Colorado and Wyoming. Mexico quickly accepted the Rio Grande as its new boundary with Texas.
  • 1861 - Civil War

    Several Southern states began moving toward joining the Union. As a result of this, the Civil War began. a struggle between the North (the Union) and the South (the Confederacy) over the expansion of slavery into western states broke out when certain Southern states got outraged.
  • 1865 - End of the Civil War

    At the Appomattox Courthouse in the state of Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee gives himself up to Ulysses S. Grant. The American Civil War had come to an end after this.
  • 1865 - Slavery

    Slavery was declared illegal by the thirteenth amendment to the United States Constitution.
