    Benjamin Franklin Kite Experiment
    Benjamin Franklin flies a kite during a storm to prove that lightning is electricity. He collected a charge in a Leyden Jar when the kite was struck by lightning which proved that lightning was electricity.

    At a peace conference the war ends. The British took Canada from the French and Florida from the Spainish but allowed France to keep its West Indian sugar islands and gave Louisiana to Spain.

    James Watt designs a steam engine
    James Watt, at the age of 29, designed a steam engine that was more efficient and produced more power than the Newcomen engine. This invention had a large impact on the Industrial Revolution.
  • Edmund Cartwright patented the power loom

    In 1785 Edmund Cartwright patented his power loom invention. This triggered the boom in the textiles industry offfering many unemployed citizens jobs. It increased efficiency and production of textiles especially in Great Britain

    The French Revolution

    The French Revolution began for several reason. The middle class wanted political power and the peasants sought for the end of the feudal system in that all the upper class ad all the wealth and riches and the lower class had nothing, there were great inequalities and very different living standards. The government were on the verge of bankruptcy and philosohes were pushing for political change. The peasants were growing restless espcially due to widespread crop failures.
  • First Fleet arrives in Australia

    After 7 long months at sea the First Fleet arrive in Australia. The 11 ships left Great Britain on the 13th May 1787. They arrived in Botany Bay between the dates of the 18th and the 20th of January 1788. There were 48 deaths and 28 births during the voyage and when they landed in Botany Bay, Australia's white population rose to 1030 people, over 700 of which were convicts.
  • Bastille Day

    Bastille Day is an annual public French holiday celebrating the storming of the Bastille nearly 250 years ago. On this day the peasants and middle class citizens stormed the Bastille which was a prison that represented the power of the aristocrats. These demonstrations showed the nobles that the people were restless and tired of the tyranny of the feudal system. The nobles abolished the feudal system out of fear and the citizens later beheaded Louis XVI by guillotine.

    Robert Fulton's first steamboat, the Clermont, makes its first run from New York City to Albany in 32 hours, travelling at a top speed of 5mph.
  • America prohibits the importation of slaves

    America prohibits the importation of Africans for enslavement as the anti-slavery amendment comes into use. Americans were no longer able to order slaves from overseas.

    Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was the 16th US president serving in office from 4th March 1861 - April 15th 1865 when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Abraham Lincoln was one of the key people in the attempt and accomplishment of abolishing slavery in the US and ending the Civil War.
  • California Gold Rush - Gold Discovered

    80,000 migrants rushed to California during the gold rush from 1848-55 in the hope of becoming rich. The goldfields were located in Sierra Nevada and Northern California. This gold rush was important in the expansion of the US states as it encouraged increases in the population in Western US

    Charles Darwin's theory of evolution was the concept that all species had evolved from smaller beings through the process of natural selection. 'Survival of the fittest' was his cliche'. Charles Darwin wrote the book 'The Origin of Species' was first published on the 24th of November 1859.     The American Civil War

    The American Civil War lasted 4 years, 3 weeks and 6 days. The last shot was fired on June 22nd 1865. The war ended by declaration and the US defeated the Confederate States. The results of the war were that the president was assassinated on the 14th of April 1865, slavery in America was aboloished and the Union prevailed. Abraham Lincoln was the leader of the Union along with General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederates were lead by Jefferson Davies.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was the 16th US president,assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln was assassinated on Good Friday as the Civil War was coming to a close. Lincoln was shot while watching the play 'Our American cousin' with his wife at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. Lincoln was the first ever US president to be assassinated.
  • Federation of Australia - Becoming of a nation

    On the 1st of January 1902 the six self-governing British colonies, NSW, QLD, VIC, TAS, NT, WA became a nation. Australia was now recognised as a seperate country to Great Britain and Australia was no longer a bunch of colonies. The first Prime Minister of Australia was Edmund Barton.
  • Sinking of the RMS Titanic

    RMS Titanic sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton UK to New York City in the North Atlantic Ocean on the 15th of April. On board were 2,224 passengers and crew, 1,502 people were killed when it sank making it the deadliest peacetime maritime disaster in modern history. The luxury ocean liner crashed into an iceberg at approxiamently 11:40pm 14th April, ships time, and sank 2 hours and 40 minutes later.

    The first ever assembly line was introduced by the Ford Motor Company. It meant that a line of workers worked on a conveyerbelt that moved at a consistent pace and each worker had an assigned job, they would have to put a certain part onto the product and then let it continue on down the conveyerbelt for co-workers to add on other parts to the product.

    World War I

    World War I was a global war that was the biggest war in history before World War II. There were 2 sides in the war the Allies which consisted of the UK, France and Russia against the Central Powers Alliance which included Germany, Italy, Austria and Hungary. Later into the war Italy changed sides to join the Allies and the Japanese and the Americans joined the allies. The main trigger to the beginning of the war was the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. The Allies won.

    Russian Revolution

    The Russian Revolution began communism around the world. During 1917 the Russians had suffered huge casualties as a result of WWI, people were very poor and the people were sick of Czar (the king) interfering with the government. In February protesters gathered in Petrograd and troops were sent to quell the protest however they changed sides. The Czar abdicated and later that year the Bolsheviks under Lenin took control of the government and established the first communist regime in the world.
