12 Discoveries in Chemistry

  • Oxygen

Jospeh Priestley, wanted to find out if there was different types of air. He found out there was such things called gases.
  • Electricity Transforms Chemicals

Humpry's discovery basically caused the aluminum industry, solar panels, ect. He discovered this by running electricity to melted pot ash.
  • Synthesis of Urea

Two inorganic chemicals created artificial urea. This was discovered by Friedrich. Although, this doesn't seem like a big deal now, back then it was.
  • Atoms Have Signatures of Light

Busen created a spectroscope by a prism and pieces of a small telescope. This allowed him to see the spectra of heated substance.
  • Periodic Table of Elements

Dmitry Medeleev wanted to explain to this students the 63 elements that were known at the time. He arranged them into similar categories. 1869 is when he published the periodic table.
  • Radioactivity

During the discovery of the Xray, chemist began to see if other radiations were of value. This led to the discovery that some minerals gave off radiation.
  • The Electron

Joseph Thomson, he was the man who discovered all atoms are made of a nucleus and electrons.
  • Atomic Theory

Dalton propose that matter is made up of atoms that are indivisible & indestructable.
  • Plastic

Plastic was founded by exploting the long string molecules of plants, thus creating the first plastics. Plastics are essentially polymers.
  • Electrons form Chemical Bonds

Two atoms combined a different substance. Gilbert was the one who discoved this.
  • Chemical Structure

Agust Kekule made a system, he represented atoms by their symbols & added marks to show how they bonded w/ each other.
  • Fullerenes

One special clustered of carbon, 60 carbons to be exact. This was named Buckminster because he was created the geodesic dome that resembled the carbons chain.
