Corps of Discovery Timeline

  • Start of Journey

    Start of Journey
    The Corps of Discovery leaves Camp Wood and starts the journey up the Missouri River. They expect to find woolly mammoths, erupting volcanoes, a mountain of pure salt, and the best water route to the Pacific Ocean.
  • First and Only Fatality

    Sergeant Charles Floyd dies probably of appendicitis. This was the only fatality of the journey. The Sergeant Floyd Monument was built for him in Sioux City, Iowa.
  • Sacagawea

    Sacagawea
    They hire Toussaint Charbonneau and his Shoshone wife, Sacagawea, to be interpreters and guides. Sacagawea was a big help to them. Clark nicknamed her Janey.
  • Jean Baptiste Charbonneau

    Jean Baptiste Charbonneau is born safely with assisstance from Lewis. He is named after his father and nicknamed Pompy.
  • Grizzly Bear

    Grizzly Bear
    The Corps are surprised of the amount of animals to hunt. They kill their first grizzly bear near the Yellowstone River in Montana. Several tribes had warned them about the Grizzlies but they underestimated them.
  • The Great Falls

    The Great Falls
    They reached the Great Falls of Missouri 16 days earlier. A big storm came while some of the explorers were near the water. They nearly were pulled into the water and swept away.
  • No NW passage

    They cross the Continental Divide and discover there is no Northwest Passage. That was one of the most important things they were looking for.
  • Rocky Mountains

    They begin the steep climb into the Bitterroot Range. They will cover more than 160 miles. It takes them 12 days to get to the other side.
  • Pacific Ocean

    They finally reach the Pacific Ocean and end their journey across the United States. They set up camp on Fort Clatsop along the Columbia River for the winter.
  • Period: to

    Blackfeet Indians

    In July 1806 they met the Blackfeet Indians and told them they wanted to bring peace to all the tribes of the West. The two enemies of the Blackfeet agreed to peace so they got guns and supplies. The Blackfeet didn't like this so they tried to steal the guns and two iBlackfeet indians died in the fight.
  • Lewis gets shot

    While hunting elk with Pierre Cruzatte Pierre accidentally shoots Lewis in the butt. He couldn't walk for 11 days. He was pretty mad at Pierre.
  • End of Journey

    End of Journey
    They reach St. Louis 2 1/2 years after their journey began. They are national heroes. Their maps were very different from what people thought the West looked like. Many things were named after them like Clark's Nutcracker and Lewis' Woodpecker.
