    18th Amendment
    This amendment banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol. This was the beginning of prohibition.
  • Palmer Raids

    Palmer Raids
    This was the government trying to arrest and deport anarchists from the United States. More than 500 foreign citizens were arrested. This occured mostly during the time of the Red Scare.
  • Volstead Act

    Volstead Act
    This allowed the government to enforce the 18th amendment. That was the restriction of alcohol. It was named after Andrew Volstead who was Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
  • Sacco and Vanzetti Trial

    Sacco and Vanzetti Trial
    They were anarchists arrested for murdering two men during an armed robbery. They were executed on August 23, 1927.

    It was led by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks as a campaign against the war. It was about a worker revolution and political racism.

    John Scopes was arrested for violating the Butler Act. Which is the unlawful teaching of evolution. He was found guilty but his verdict was overturned due to a technicality.

    Charles Lindbergh crosses the Altantic
    His nickanme was "lucky Lindy" and he rode his plane the "Spirit of St. Louis," from Roosevelt Field to Long Island to Le Bourget Field in France. He won the medal of honor.
  • 1st talking movie, The Jazz Singer

    1st talking movie, The Jazz Singer
    The Jazz Singer came out in New York with the voice of Al Jolson. The first words were "Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothing yet." People were ecstatic and got up out of their seats and started hollering and clapping.

    Herbert Hoover elected president
    He was blamed for the stock market crash of 1929. He refused to authorize money to large scale relief programs. If he did that it would have helped the hungry and homeless.

    This began a 12 year economic depression. Many people were homeless and had to live in a slum called "Hooverville."
