The Sentry

  • Found an old boche dug-out

  • rain guttered down with waterfalls of slime

  • steps too thick with clay to climb

  • air smells old, sour and of rotting men that had been there for years

  • a bomb smashed through the door blowing out candles

  • the sentry came thumping down the steps, followed by his rifle

  • they thought the sentry was dead but then he said i'm blind, i'm blind

  • a man held a flame against his eye lids to see if he could see the slightest bit of light

  • he could not see a thing and his eyeballs were bulged like squids'

  • the other man forgets about him and goes to the other posts

  • others bled and spewed and nearly drowned themselves

  • the man tries not to remember the half chattering broken teeth of the sentry

  • the soldiers hope faded
