10 Major Battles During WWI

  • The Serbian Campaign

    This battle began with the Austrain shelling of Belgrade, followed by a military invasion of Austria-Hungary into Serbia. The Serbians lost 11,000,000 soldiers and civilians.
  • Battle of Tannenberg

    The Germans were able to deeat the Russians despite being outnumbered by two Russian field armies. Russias casualties were 170,000 while Germany had only 12,000

    This battle put an end to the German offensive that went on for a month. The war had now reached the outskirts of Paris.

    The Australian and New Zealand soldies began to see themselves as a seperate and unique country from Britain. In 1915 casualties had mounted and allies decided to open a second front. Winston Churchill and his men attacked the Dardanelles to threaten the Ottoman capital of Constantinople.
  • The Battle of Verdun

    The French wereable to recapture land that the Germans had tooke from them. Neraly 40 million artillery shells were exchanged during this battle.
  • Battle of Somme

    In one day the British suffered 60,000 casualties including the death of 19,240; it was the greatest single loss of life in history of the British army.
  • Battle of Arras

    The Allied forces(British) needed to break the German lines so they formed a plan to assualt the trenches at the town of Arras.
  • The Battle of Passchendaele

    Mud was a feature from the area, the mud would bring down tanks and even drown men.
  • The Spring Offensive

    The Germans lost more than 680,000 pushing for an end to the war; most German loses were to storm troopers units.
  • Hundred Days Offensive

    The result of this battle was a resounding success for the allies who broke the German Army. The loss of the German empire resulted in demanding terms in the peace treaty.
