Nanking Massacre/Rape of Nanking
This was a mass killing and ravaging of Chinese citizens. They don't know how much were killed, people debate a lot its anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000. It all went down in China, mostly in Nanjing. The Japanese did all this because they were in war.

The Munich Conference
This was a meeting with Hitler and all the main people in the League of nations. Czech wasn't allowed at the meeting. The meeting took place in Munich, Germany. In the meeting they agreed to give Hitler the Sudetenland if he stopped his aggression after that. Hitler agreed to this. The reason this meeting was set up was to avoid war at all cost because of see what WWI did.

Kristallnacht
Nazi's in Germany started torching synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses and killed close to 100 Jews. It happened because of Hitler's revolts in Germany saying that they were the perfect race and everyone else must die.

Non-Aggression Pact is signed
This was a pact between Germany and the Soviet Union where they agreed to take no military action against each other. Ths happened to make sure Germany could take Poland without any opposition. It also said in the Pact how they would split up the conquered lands.

Around 1.5 million German Soldiers invade Poland, while they were invading they were also bombing various parts of Poland. Hitler did this for more living space. Germany did take Poland.

Battle of Dunkirk
This all happened in Dunkirk located in Northern France. Germany invaded the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium in a blitzkrieg, With Germany having the superior army they took it very quickly. Then 338,000 British Expeditionary Force and Allied troops were evacuated from Dunkirk to England as German forces closed in on them. This happened because Hitler wanted to keep expanding.

Fall of Paris
Paris fell to the Germans after they slowly made their way there, The Germans bombed and bomed their way there. Once they got to Paris they forced them to sign an Armistice like the one the Germans signed after WWI. The Germans also burned down all land marks and key points.

Selective Training and Service Act is passed
This was the first peace time draft in the US. This new act required all men ages 21 to 35 to register for the draft. Men drafted serve for 1 year, only 900,000 men can be trained. This happened because of low military men, people didn't like war after WWI. Also in the face of another war. Draft was in the US.

Operation Barbarossa
Hitler launched his armies eastward in a massive invasion of the Soviet Union. The army include three million German soldiers, 150 divisions, and three thousand tanks. They moved quickly across the frontier into Soviet territory. The Germans offensive into the soviet Union failed. Hitler did this because he wanted to conquer everyone.

Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor
It all happened in Honolulu, Hawaii, when Japan attacked the US navy base there. It was a complete surprise attack it started at 8 a.m. Hundreds of Japanese plane. They damaged or destroyed 20 naval vessels.They attacked to destroy important American fleet units, there by preventing the Pacific Fleet from interfering with Japanese conquest of the Dutch East Indies and Malaya.

Bataan Death March
The surrender of the Bataan Peninsula on the main Philippine island of Luzon to the Japanese lead to the Death March. The 75,000 Filipino and American troops were forced to make a 65 mile march in extreme heat, and terrible treatment from guards, thousands died.

Located 750 miles off the coast of Japan, the island of Iwo Jima had three airfield. The US invaded the the island, leading to the battle of Iwo Jima that lasted five weeks. They attacked this island because it was believed that the airfeids on the island could help with japan invasions.

Battle of Okinawa
Navy’s Fifth Fleet and more than 180,000 US troops pushed the Pacific island of Okinawa for the final push toward Japan. When they landed they had no resistance and walked onto the island to be ambushed. Winning the Battle of Okinawa put Allied forces within striking distance of Japan, this is why they attacked the island.
