  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    -Fought between the US and Japanse
    -US won
    -In May 1942, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto sought to draw the US Pacific Fleet into a battle where he could overwhelm and destroy it. To accomplish this he planned an invasion of Midway Island which would provide a base for attacking Hawaii. Was a turning point in WWII for the Pacific.

  • Battle of El Alamein

    Battle of El Alamein
    -Fought between the Allies and the Axis Powers
    -Allies won
    -It marked a turning point for the Allies in the western dessert campaign, stopping the Axis from gaining control of the Suez Canal and the middle east oil fields.

  • Staligrad

    -Russians win
    -In September 1942, the German commander of the Sixth Army, General Paulus, assisted by the Fourth Panzer Army, advanced on the city of Stalingrad. His primary task was to secure the oil fields in the Caucasus and to do this, Paulus was ordered by Hitler to take Stalingrad. The Germans final target was to have been Baku.Considered to be a turinging point in WWII.

The Allied forces were advancing towards Germany, pushing the Germans back town by town and believing the war to be almost won. But this was Hitler’s last attempt to stop the momentum. His aim was to advance through the wooded area of the Ardennes in Luxembourg and Belgium and cut the Allied armies in two and then push on towards the port of Antwerp

    -It was a heavy battle with high casulties on both sides. Japan used kamikaze attacks against US warships in an effort to force the US to retreat. Kamikaze attacks involved Japanese pilots crashing their planes into ships; they were suicide missions.
