  • japan invades china

    japan, eager for the vast natural resources to be found in china and seeing her obvious weakness invaded and occupied manchuria. japans invasion of china was due essentially to japans desire. the country did not have the capability of designing and manufacturing modern weapons. the nationalist army relied on importing weapons. they had almost no air force, few armored units, and inadequate artillery.
  • rape of nanking

    during the sino japanese war, nanking the capital of china falls to japanese forces and the chinese government flees to hankow, further inland along the yangtze river. the japanese had even bragged they would conquer all of china in just three months. the japanese butchered an estimated 150000 male "war prisoners", massacred an additional 50000 male civilians, and raped at least 20000 women and girls of all ages, many of whom were mutilated or killed in the process.
  • german blitzkreig

    germany quickly overran much of europe and was victorious for more than years by relying on a new militiary tactic called the "blitzkreig" blitzkreig tactics require the concentration of offensive weapons along a narrow frony. they did it to move along fast and to have more protection and to destory there targets alot faster.
  • fall of paris

    germany launched an invasion of france and the low countries. the french and british allies accepted germanys surrender and between them signed the armistice that ended the first world war. nine allied destoryers and approximately 200 civilian vessels were lost during the evacuation. the troopship lancastria was sunk with the loss of around 4000 refugees, british ships bombarded the flee, killing 1600 people.
  • pearl harbor

    it was a surpise by the japanese navy against the united states naval base at pearl harbor, in the united states territory of hawaii. the attack on pearl harbor was intended to neutralize the u.s. pacific fleet and hence protect japans advance into malaya and the dutch east indies, where it got access to natural resources such as oil and rubber. they killed more than 2400 americans as well as damaging or destorying eight navy battleships and more than 100 planes.

  • bataan death march

    The Bataan Death March was the forcible transfer from Saisaih Pt. and Mariveles to Camp O'Donnell by the Imperial Japanese Army of 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war which began on April 9, 1942, after the three-month Battle of Bataan in the Philippines during World War II. About 2,500–10,000 Filipino and 100–650 American prisoners of war died before they could reach their destination.
  • d-day

    the day the allied powers crossed the english channel and landed on the beaches of normandy, france, beginning the libertation of western europe from nazi control during ww2. d-day was the first massive military campaign to free europe from nazi control, creating a second front in europe and trapping germany between soviet union, the united states and the united kingdom. by forcing hitlers armies back, the allies reduced the pressure to recapture large parts of france and germany.
  • liberation of concentration camps

    as allied troops moved across europe in a series of offensives against nazi germany, they began to encounter tens of thousands of concentration camp prisoners. many of these prisoners had survived forced marches into the interior of germany from camps in occupied poland. 42 jews were murdered and as many as 80 others were wounded during the pogrom which followed. this led to over 100,00 jews fleeing poland.
  • the battlr of the bulge

    an attemp to push the allied front line west from northern france to northeastern belgium. it was one of the largest battles fought on the western front in europe. it is also the largest battle fought by the united states army. german losses were greater than their army could take. approximately 30000 soldiers and 44000 infantry forces were killed by capture.
  • battle of iwo jima

    it was the only large engagment of the war in which allied forces suffered more casualties than their japenese counter parts. the american invasion happened because they wanted to capture the island of iwo jima. combined with the attacks on iwo jima was the americans desire to finally destory japans merchant fleet so that the japanese mainland couldnt be supplied from the food- rich sectors of south east asia which japan still had control over.
  • battle of okinawa

    it was the largest amphibious landing in the pacific theater of world war 2. it also resulted in the largest casualties with over 100000 japanese casualties and 50000 casualties for the allies. the u.s. was getting closer and closer to japan in regaining control of the japanese advances in the pacific.okinawa was the final action of the u.s. before the decision was made to use the atomic bomb. americans suffered 12500 dead and 35000 wounded.
  • ve day

    victory in europe day celebrated on 8 may, 1945. to mark the formal acceptance by the allies of world war 2 of nazi germany unconditional surrender of its armed forces. ve day officially announced the end of ww2 in europe. monday 7th at 02.41 german general jodi signed the unconditional surrender document that formally ended war in europe. germans surrendered to their soviet antagonists.
  • dropping of the atomic bomb

    The United States becomes the first and only nation to use atomic weaponry during wartime when it drops an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Though the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan marked the end of World War II, the American bomber Enola Gay dropped a five-ton bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. A blast equivalent to the power of 15,000 tons of TNT reduced four square miles of the city to ruins and immediately killed 80,000 people. Tens of thousands more died.
