    Japan declares war against China

    Invasion of Nanking
    The Japanese invaded Nanking, a city in China, they wanted to control the city. The Japanese mass murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians/soldiers. This battle represented the single worst battle during World War Two; the battle took over 6 weeks.
  • Hitler took Austria and Czech

    Hitler took Austria and Czech
    Hitler took over Austria and Czechoslovakia, the world didn’t stop him, he needed an army of his own. Europe was afraid of another world war. Hitler signed an agreement not to go after any more parts of Czech. Shortly after France and England declared war.

    Germany created spaces where Jews would not be allowed. This consisted schools, theaters, hospitals and the Jews would need to identify themselves. Jews would be required to wear badges with the Star to David for identification.

    German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact
    German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact was created; Germany and Russia agreed to share Poland. Germany invaded first and 2 weeks later Russia met the Polish army, Poland lost.

    Euthanasia Program
    The Euthanasia Program, this was secret order that Hitler signed to ‘kill’ any children, under 5, that showed signs of mental or physical disabilities. It soon expanded to teens and adults, due to the success of the program, over 200,000 died through this program.

    Auschwitz
    Auschwitz was a death camp located in Poland. More than 1,000,000 Jews died at that camp. Around one hundred thousand other people were murdered their as well. It was built and operated by the Third Reich.
  • Hitler Invades Russia

    Hitler Invades Russia
    This battle took longer than expected, many soldiers died once winter started. The civilians dug, created many traps and were willing to fight. About, 85,000 German soldiers died with in 6 weeks.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    Japan needed to distract the US in order to attack China, they were worried that we would react and come to the rescue too soon. The Japanese flew fighter jets to our biggest military base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It was truly a surprise attack; 2,403 Americans died, 180 US aircraft and 18 US navy vessels sank.
  • America Enters the War

    America Enters the War
    America declared war on December 8th, a day after Pearl Harbor. On Dec. 11th, Italy and Germany declared war on America. FDR asked congress to declare war as well.
  • Rosie the Riveter

    Rosie the Riveter
    Rosie the Riveter was a famous icon that represented women who went to work during the war. Women worked in factories, shipyards, they made war goods and often replaced the men’s jobs while they were at war.
  • Manhattan Project

    Manhattan Project
    This was a secret plan to create an atomic bomb. Their reason behind it was to save lives, they wanted to test a really expensive weapon, they wanted to show Russia how big and strong their military is. They feared that Germany would create one as well. The United States lead the project but Canada and the United Kingdom helped us, they mainly supplied the uranium used.
  • The Wannsee Conference

    The Wannsee Conference
    The Wannsee Conference held a meeting where 15 Nazis met to discuss the ‘Jewish Question’. They also declared that the Jews should be migrated; however, it would be expensive. The topic of the ‘final solution’ was talked about but they never used the words death camps.
  • Executive Order 9066

    Executive Order 9066
    FDR signed the The Executive Order 9066, this declared that all Japanese Americans, didn’t actually state that but implied it, were to be placed in internment camps. These camps were in the desert, were dirty and had no running water. Americans feared that Japanese people were spies and trying to sabotage America.
  • Bataan Death March

    Bataan Death March
    The prisoners of war, American prisoners and Filipinos prisoners were kept captive by the Japanese, were lead on a 5-12 day death march. This was a 60-mile march to a POW camp. Many Americans and Filipinos died, 10,000 - 13,000. If any prisoner were to stop they would be killed, either breath to death, shot or worse. During this march the weren't given any food or water.
  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    This was the turning point of the war, in the Pacific, and was only six months after Pearl Harbor. America successfully won after the death of 5,000 Japanese soldiers, the sinking of 4 aircraft ships and 332 planes being shot down. The three almost their entire imperial fleet into the battle and America still won.
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    Battle of Stalingrad
    This was Germany’s second attempt at invading Russia, they failed due to the same reasons. Russia was the main reason that Germany lost the war. Germany was too unsupplied, the time was too long and the civilians were too prepared. Americans were able to invade Germany with little resistance due to Hitler’s obsession with Russia. Hitler needed russia for ‘living space’, 20 million Russians died.
  • War Refugee Board

    War Refugee Board
    President Roosevelt created the War Refugee Board, this, in that matter of a couple months, allowed more than 200,000 Jewish refugees into the US. Albert Einstein happens to be one of the refugees, he helped look into the atomic bomb.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    Operation Overlord (D-Day) was the invasion on Normandy. It still is the largest sea, land and air invasion ever; the Allied powers won, Eisenhower was the general at the time. More than 160,000 Allied soldiers landed on the 50-mile coast. More than 9,000 troops died.More than 9,000 troops died.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt met to decide what is going to happen to Germany. They split Germany into 4 sections, one for each of the three that represented and France. Stalin agreed to enter the war against Japan. They all promised they would provide free elections; Stalin broke his promise and forced the Soviet rule.

    Iwo Jima
    Iwo Jima is a small island off Japan, by the end of the war and American got a secure hold on the island only 7,000 Americans died compared to 200,000 Japanese. When the marines arrived they were surprised by how the Japanese created tunnels and strategically planned hiding places.
  • Hitler

    Hitler committed suicide on April 30th.
  • Potsdam Declaration

    Potsdam Declaration
    Truman, who is now America’s president, Churchill and Stalin met/agreed that they would only consider Japan's surrender under certain standards. These standards would include Japan giving up their military and allowing a peaceful government to rule. If they didn't accept they would be destroyed
  • Hiroshima

    Hiroshima
    The A-bomb/Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima. This bomb was much more effective, 80,000 Japanese died instantly, 60,000 died within the year and 60,000 died through the years. This was America’s first attempt to cause Japan to surrender, before the bomb was dropped leaflets were released. These warning were dropped by planes, they were dropped on the islands that were potentially in danger. The Japanese did not flee their islands and did not surrender either.
  • Nagasaki

    Nagasaki
    Just three days after the Little Boy was dropped the Fat Man (H-bomb) was dropped on Nagasaki. This time 60,000 - 80,000 within the first few months. The rest of the world did not know that the US only had two bombs. We waited a few more days and hoped that Japan would surrender, they did 6 days later. The Japanese citizens did not believe that Hirohito (Japan’s Emperor) would surrender, however he did.
