    When allied troops invaded the beaches of Germany-controlled France. In order to gain a foothold for the invasion against Hitler's Nazi Garmany, allied troops had to tkae contol of the French beaches.
  • Battle of Iwo Kima

    American offensive against the Japanese. They required the island to stage an attack on the Japanese mainland. The haavily fortified island took five days to capute with heavy losses but became useless in the attack of the Japanese mainland (due to the dropping of the Atomic Bomb).
