  • Stock Market Crash (Economical)

    The stock market crashes, and over 30 billion dollars worth of stock is lost. This day is known as Black Tuesday, and the biggest contribution to the start of the Great Depression.
  • Japan Seizes Manchuria (Diplomatic)

    The Japanese invasion of Manchuria began on September 19, 1931, when the Kwantung Army of the Empire of Japan invaded Manchuria immediately following the Mukden Incident. The Japanese established a puppet state, called Manchukuo, and their occupation lasted until the end of World War II.
  • Franklin Roosevelt is elected president (Political)

    Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected president, and all pressure is on him to get them out of the depression. He immediately puts new programs in action, and promotes The New Deal.
  • Emergency Banking Act (Economical)

    Right after taking office as President, FDR shut down all of the banks in the nation and Congress passed the Emergency Banking Act which gave the government the opportunity to inspect the health of all banks. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was formed by Congress to insure deposits up to $5000.
  • The Civil Works Administration (Economical)

    A program made by FDR helped create over 4 million jobs. He makes projects such as building hospitals, roads, or playgrounds to help to employ people and lower unemployment.
  • Rape of Nanjing (Social)

    Japan invaded Nanjing, and also the capital. Chang Kai-Shek forced the civilians to stay, and forbade them to leave, but he let all the Chinese troops leave. The Japanese troops committed mass murder and rape, 200,000-300,000 people were killed, and up 80,000 women and children were raped.
  • Germany Invades Poland (Diplomatic)

    When Germany invaded Poland it was the start of World War II. They attacked polish airfields, and naval forces.
  • Britain and France declare war on Germany.

    In reaction to Germany's attack on Poland Britain and France declare war on Germany. War world II offically begins.
  • Blitzkreig (Military)

    Hitler launched his blitzkrieg (lightning war) against Holland and Belgium. Rotterdam was bombed almost to extinction. Both countries were occupied
  • Italy enters War (cultural)

    Italy enters the war on the Axis power side.
  • Battle of Britain

    In the battle of britain Hitler sent bombers to destroy british ports, and attacked their air fields. Then he heavily bombed London, and other large cities. The bombing did not stop until October 31st.
  • Operation Barbossa (Military)

    Hitler sent 3 million soldiers and 3,500 tanks into Russia. The Russians were taken by surprise as they had signed a treaty with Germany in 1939. Stalin immediately signed a mutual assistance treaty with Britain and launched an Eastern front battle that would claim 20 million casualties. The USA, which had been supplying arms to Britain under a 'Lend-Lease' agreement,
  • Pearl Harbor

    The Japanese had a surprise attack on the United States naval base in Pearl Harbor. The base was attacked with Japense fighters, bombers, and torpedo planes. This event led the United States to be entered into World War II.
  • Britain and United States declare war on Japan (diplomatic)

    Folloiwing the Pearl Harbor attack, Britain and the United States declared war on Japan.
  • Battle of Midway (military)

    The USA defeated the Japanese navy at the Battle of Midway. Following this victory, the US navy was able to push the Japanese back.
  • Battle of Stalingrad (military)

    The Battle of Stalingrad was a major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad.The troops were in Russia during winter, Hitler ordered them not to leave.Many died over the winter due to lack of supplies.
  • Italy Surrenders (Diplomatic)

    Mussolini had been thrown out of office and the new government of Italy surrendered to the British and the USA. They then agreed to join the allies. The Germans took control of the Italian army, freed Mussolini from imprisonment.
  • D-Day (Diplomatic)

    The allies launched an attack on Germany's forces in Normandy, Western France. Thousands of transports carried an invasion army under the supreme command of general Eisenhower to the Normandy beaches. The Germans who had been fed false information about a landing near Calais, rushed troops to the area but were unable to prevent the allies from forming a solid bridgehead. For the allies it was essential to first capture a port.
  • Battle of the Bulge (Military)

    An attempt to push the Allied front line west from northern France to northwestern Belgium. The Battle of the Bulge, so-called because the Germans created a "bulge" around the area of the Ardennes forest in pushing through the American defensive line, was the largest fought on the Western front. Ended with the Allied victory.
  • V.E. Day (Cultural)

    V.E. day was the celebration of end offical end of World War II in Europe. Great Britain and the Unites States celebrated their victory , Germany completed surrendered.
