The Germans had defeated France and were left to invade Britain, however before they could do that they needed to destroy Britains Air force in order to prepare for invasion. The Battle was planned out so that the Germans would bomb any major airports and airplane runways. -
Operation Barbarossa
Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union, thsi was significant as it marked a turn in the war. By having Germany conquer Russia, it showed the potential than they had to occupy all of Europe. -
Bombing at Pearl Harbor
On the 7th of December, 1941 thr Japanese bombed pearl harbor killing almost 2,500 people. When the Japanese Bombed Pearl Harbor it immediatly engaged the US in the war, as opposed to the isolationism that they were taking to before hand. -

As Japan was the last step to ending the war the idea of "island hopping" was introduced to take over Japan, hpwever this would cost many lived and a large amoutn fo time, and the US were aiming to end it as soon as possible which is where the idea of the atomic bomb was introduced and later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. -

The day that victory was declared over Japan symbolized the end of world war II as Japan was the last major power keeping from the end of the war.
