    Battle of Liège
    The Battle of Liege was a World War I military engagement fought between the Belgian forces and the German Imperial Army that started on August 5th and ended the 16th of 1914. This war was not only the opening battle of the German invasion into Belgium, but it was also the first land battle of the Great War.
    The Germans introduced a weapon which remained unknown to the Allies, Austrian-built 17-inch howitzers. With the aid of the howitzers they were able ot win the battle.

    The Battle of Tannenberg was a terrible defeat for the Russian Army. The plan was for the Russians to attack the Germans as a form of defence. The battle was a complete disaster. Of the 150,000 Russian soldiers that fought, 30,000 were killed and 95,000 were taken prisoner.

    The cause of US involvement was the naval war between Germany and Great Britain. Britain set up a naval blockade of Germany, preventing materials and other goods from reching Germany by sea. To retaliate Germany enforced its blockade using unrestricted submarine warfare, which caused the sinking of passenger liners. The British ship, Lusitania was sunk by German forces, causeign 1,100 civilian casualties, including over 100 Americans. The death of these Americans caused the US to join the war.

    This battle was known for the loss of 58,000 British troops, which made the record for one day loss of many. The General Staff made it clear before the success, which the Somme campaign might yield. They needed to relieve the pressure on the French Army at Verdun.

The Germans lost more men in the Battle of Amiens than in any other battle of the war and was a crushing blow.
