The British imposed the Stamp act to the colonies. Parliament taxed the people of the colonies because they needed money to pay the soldiers defending their territory.

The stamped act was reapealed ending the immediate crisis but the dispute was not solve after the repeal of the stamp act.

The French granted diplomatic recognition to the United States after a British defeat. When Spain and Dutch Republic entered the war, the British faced war in America and Europe.

Delegates met in Philadelphia at the constitutional convention to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead the delegates decided to make a new government.

General Cornwallis was forced to surrender under the French and American army at Yorktown. With that defeat British decided to end the war.

The American and British leaders signed the Treaty of Paris which Britain and the rest of the world recoganized the independence of the United States. It also granted the Americans control of the western territory from the Appalachians to the Mississippi River.
