    Tokugawa Shogunate

    This was the period of 200 years the Japan was under Tokugawa control and kept Japan away from Westernization. Isolationism was used in this period of time to keep out other influence and grow by their own means. The Daimyo, landowners in the ruling class, went through the worst hardships at this time.
  • English East India Company Arrived in India

    The English East India Company arrived in India in 1608 to start trade with the East. They gained enough land to overthrow and install a puppet government.
  • Mughals Start Bengal War

    Mughals Start Bengal War
    1756 marked the start of a 9 year war where the Mughal Empire unsuccessfully tried to take over Bengal after it was made a British territory.
  • British East India Company Comes to Power

    British East India Company Comes to Power
    This is the time that the British East India Company officially came to power and entered the Bengal War where they took Bengal as British terrtitory.
  • Bengal War Ends

    Bengal War Ends
    This marked the defeat of the Mughals in the Bengal War, and kept Bengal as a British territory at this time.
  • Opium Outlawed

    The Qing Dynasty decided to outlaw opium This was an issue for the British because they'd often trade opium for silver in China. As a result they had to resort to smuggling it inside the borders.
  • Lin Zexu

    Lin Zexu
    After the British started smuggling opium into China for trade after the law was passed, Lin Zexu an official wanted to ban trade from Britain until they stopped smuggling and trading opium at all.
  • Attack on British Opium Ships

    Attack on British Opium Ships
    During the same year as Lin Zexu wanted to ban trade, he decided to attack British ships that were importing opium illegally into China The British struck back and it started a war.
  • Treaty of Najing

    Treaty of Najing
    This treaty was passed in 1842 a little over two years after the start of the Opium War. The Chinese were forced to sign after suffering major defeat from the British. The British also made them open more ports and allow more trade from them specifically.
  • Indian Slavery Act

    The Indian Slavery Act was passed and forbid the processs of selling and buying slaves, and eventually it outlawed it all together.

    The Caste System End
    The Caste system was the religious structure system of Hinduism. It was determined by birth, basically where you were born and to whom. When the slavery act was passed, they later on banned the system.
  • Sati Outlawed

    Sati Outlawed
    The practice of Sati was also outlawed. This was where the widows of the husbands would throw themselves over where they were cremated to show the dedication.

    Hong Xiuquan and the Taiping Rebellion
    After floods killed rows of crops and the government neglected to do anything about it, the working class and peasants grew angry. Hong gathered a group of the working class. He said he was urged by Jesus to have them all fight for heaven. His followers became more of a cult, thinking of him as the God. He joined with other groups and headed his own dynasty.

    Millard Fillmore sent Commodore Matthew Perry
    The United States president Millard Fillmore sent Matthew Perry to negotiate some form of trade with Japanese before Russia could. His plan was to force Japan to sign the Favored Nation Treaty to ensure they wouldn't overlook trade with America.
  • Treaty of Kanagawa

    Treaty of Kanagawa
    The treaty of kanagawa was signed eventually in March of 1854 and Japan finally opened trade. The treaty gave U.S. merchants citizenship, and gave low taxes on trade.
  • Mutiny Within Indian Troops

    Tianjin Treaty
    This was a tough year for China as they were dealing with the rebellions, and the British saw this opening and made a false claim about trade, and attacked a Chinese ship. After now fighting the British and their own people, the government signed the Tianjin Treaty. The ban on opium was also forcefully lifted.

    This was the year that the Mughal Empire fell from power and ended for good.

    This rebellion was a reaction to the mutiny in 1857. It started off when the troops opened fire on British soldiers and took over Delhi, a small British territory.

    After the Sepoy Rebellion, the East Indian Company decided to disband, and rule India as the Brisish Raj to better gain and hold control.

    CiXi
    Empress CiXi saw the unjust and unrest in the working class and tired to step in and help out. She also introduced Western technology and science to China.

    Meji Restoration
    This was a time when the Samauri attempted to strengthen the power of the military to prevent fighting within the country. This helped Japan to become a major power in Asia. This was a start of the Coup D'etat to gain more control for the people and push out the government.

    Iwakura Mission
    This was when a Japanese diplomat was sent to the West to gather information about new technology, ideas, and knowledge for Japan to further grow as a country.
  • Suez Canal Creation

    Suez Canal Creation
    The Ottoman Empire built the Suez Canal in 1869 to better trade. They allowed the British Raj to use it, and made traveling from India to Africa or other places super easy and faster.
  • Zaibatsus Class Takes Over

    Zaibatsus Class Takes Over
    When the industrialization period began, many families who were powerhouses and banking families dominated during this time in terms of profit and social status. These families were known as the Zaibatsus's.
  • Sino- Japanese War

    Sino- Japanese War
    The War happened soon after the Qing Dynasty fell, and CiXi died. Taiwan was lost and the Chang river fell under British control. This war forced open trade and made the government of China so weak the Nationalist Party was able to move in.
  • Indian National Congress

    Indian National Congress
    After the many wars the British was fighting, there was a call to form a congress. After it was first instated, it marked the beginning of the National Independence Movement. This congress really wanted self-ruling and to get up to speed with Western advancements.
  • Parliamentary System

    After seeing the effects and beginning of the American Civil War, Japan decided that a Democratic system was too dangerous. So instead they created a parliamentary system and even ratified a Japanese constitution to give more rights to the people.
  • Diet - German Inspiration

    The constitution instated a bicameral German inspired government system. With an upper and lower house to help with legislation process. This was called the Diet. The lower house was all by election, and the upper house was the landowning class.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    The rebellion happened under CiXi's rule. She encouraged officials under her to take power. They got the title Boxer's due to their skilled abilities in martial arts. They killed all foreigners and try to change the Western influence. The ending was more rights for Westerners in China, and paying for western countries to help them out in the war.
  • Staged Attack On Russians

    Japan staged an attack on Russian at a trading port. This started a war that lasted for a year with most fighting happening in Japan and in Manchuria. In Manchuria villages were burned and people were killed in the fights.
  • Treaty of Portsmouth

    After a year of the war, the Japanese won and ended up signing the Treaty of Portsmouth to regain control over Manchuria. They completely wrecked the Russian Navy and won the battle. However now Japan was in more debt due to the year long expensive war.
  • President Roosevelt

    President Roosevelt
    Since Japan was in a lot of debt and need of funds they turned to the Russians who had lost the war. Paying them back wasn't stated in the treaty, and the entire treaty was been overseen by U.S president Roosevelt. After Roosevelt supported the refusal to pay Japan, anti-american riots broke out throughout Japan.
  • Amritsar Massacre

    Amritsar Massacre
    This massacre was one of the straws that further pushed the Indians to want freedom and to self-govern. A ban had been put in place for public gatherings, and some unaware of this went to a celebration and were met with bullets being fired into the crowds.
  • Guangxu

    Guangxu
    Guangxu ruled over China under the influence of CiXi. He was later on easily swayed by a group of radicals to start a hundred day reform. They wanted to lessen the divided and get China up to speed so it's taken seriously. Later on these reforms were destroyed by CiXi, angering the lower class.
