Winston Churchill: The price of greatness is responsibility

    Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was born to an aristocratic family on November 30, 1874
  • Boarding School

    Churchill wa enrolled in Harrow School and late in the Harrow Rifle Corps. At this time, he showed the charcteristics of persistance and commitment because At first it took him three tries to pass the exam for the British Royal Military College. However, once there, he did well and graduated 20th in his class of 130. He was committed to pass the exam and his persistance allowed him to continue in the military process so he could later become the Prime Minister of the UK.

    Churchill became a Member of Parliament in the Conservative Party.
  • Liberal Party

    Churchill was unconvinced that the Conservative Party was commited to social justice so he switched to the Liberal Party.
  • Prime Minister

    He was elected a Member of Parliament in 1908 in the Liberal Party, and was appointed to the Prime Minister's Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade. This same year, he introduced several reforms for the prison system, introduced the first minimum wage, and helped set up labor exchanges for the unemployed and unemployment insurance.
    This actions define him as a change master, he had a vision for the British population and fighted for their benefits.

    In this event, Churchill showehis side of decision make and risk taker. Two robbers were caught inside a burning house. Still unclear of what really happened, it si believed that Churchill ordered the poliece to do nothing about the fire, to let the house burn. He made this decision with the mentality of why risk more lives in that incident. He cut the limb to save the body, and that is a true example of risk taking and fast decision making.
  • Admiralty First Lord

    Churchill served as First Lord of the Admiralty and helped modernize the British Navy. He ordered that new warships be built with oil-fird instead of coal-fired engines. He was also one of the first to promote military aircraft. He was so enthusiastic about aviation that he tok flying lessons to understand his area better.
    These actions show us how much of a big thinker and change master he was. It was a revolutionary idea at this time to introduce oil-fired engines in aircraft.

    Churchill served as a Minister of War and Air and Colonial Secretary. In this position, he also made risk taking decisions. He suggested that poisonous gas be used to put down a rebellion in Iraq, a British holding.

    The day Britain declared war on Germany, Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admirality and a Member of the War Cabinet.

    Churchill was appointed Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. Shortly after, Germany started invading the rest of Eurpoe so Britain stood alone against the onslaught.
    In this situation, Churchill showed that he was courageous, positive, and accepted the power he was given. It was a tough situation to be in: leader of a country that is standing alone against the rest of the continent is not an easy thing to do, but becase of his traits, he passed through this and succeeded.
  • Battle of Britain

    Churchill announced that the Battle of Britain was about to begin and made one of his iconic speeches. Churchill kept resisting the Nazi dominance and made an alliance with the US and the Soviet Union.

    While on a visit to the United States, he made his famous "Iron Curtain" speech, warning of Soviet domination in Eastern Europe. He also suggested that Britain remain independent from European coalitions and maintain its independence.

    Churchill suffered a severe stroke that left him gravely ill and died nine days later at the age of 90.
