William Golding Timeline

By IanKah
  • Oxford

For most of his education, William went to his fathers school until 1930, when he started to go to Oxford for college. He started out in science as his father wanted him to but changed his major to English a couple years later.
  • Royal Navy

In 1940, Golding temporarily abandoned his teaching job to serve in WWII. This helped serve as inspiration for his first novel, Lord of the Flies, when he talks about the evil of man.
  • First Novel

In 1954, Golding published Lord of the Flies as his first novel after 21 attempts. This novel was about British schoolboys who landed on an island after a shipwreck, and would prove to be his most famous novel he will ever write.
